Best Rooftop Bars in Phuket

Phuket rooftop bars are spread across the island, from Patong hotel terraces to hillside bars above Kata Noi with panoramic sea views. A building height law passed in 1997 limits construction near beaches to 12 metres (the height of a coconut tree), so most rooftop bars in Phuket are not very high. Instead, they use the island’s hills to get altitude. The result is a different kind of rooftop experience: open-air terraces above the tree line with wide views of the Andaman Sea, not 50th-floor skyscrapers like Bangkok’s rooftop bars. Some are expensive and exclusive (Baba Nest at Sri Panwa has a two-week waiting list). Others are affordable and relaxed (Quip in Phuket Town, Heaven near Karon Viewpoint). Most are best visited around sunset. I have been to all of them over the years, and the list below is organised by area and style to help you find the right one for your evening.

My Top 5 Rooftop Bars in Phuket

I have been to every rooftop bar on this page more than once. If you only have time for a few, these are the five I keep going back to.
Baba Nest Rooftop Bar at Sri Panwa Phuket

Baba Nest at Sri Panwa

Still, the one rooftop bar I take visiting friends to when they ask for the best sunset in Phuket. It is far, expensive, and you need to book weeks ahead, but nothing else on the island comes close. The 360-degree view from that wooden deck, surrounded by water with the islands in the distance, is something you do not forget. Read More
Reflections Rooftop Bar at The Nai Harn Resort Phuket

The rooftop I go to when I want something quieter than the usual crowd. The terrace sits right above Nai Harn Bay with cushioned seating and water features around you. The cocktails are well made, and the view over Windmill Hill at sunset is one of the best on the south coast. Read More
Akoya rooftop bar on Ao Yon Beach in Phuket Island

The Sundeck Rooftop Bar Kata Noi Phuket

The Sundeck

High above Kata Noi Beach on the road between Kata and Nai Harn. Almost everyone drives past this spot at least once. The view down to Kata Noi is excellent, the sangria is their signature, and they serve proper food if you want to stay for dinner. One of the newer rooftops, but already one of the most popular. Malika Terrace and Sky Bar at Kalima Resort in Phuket

Malika at Kalima Resort

The one I recommend to people who want a quiet sunset without the crowds. It is at the Kalima Resort on the hill between Patong and Kamala, with a clean view over the sea. Not many people know about it, and that is part of why I like it. No DJ, no fuss, just a good drink and a sunset. Read More

Rooftop Bars in Patong

Patong has more rooftop bars than any other area in Phuket. Most are on hotel terraces overlooking Patong Bay. They are convenient if you are staying in Patong and want a sunset drink before heading to Bangla Road. Kee Sky Lounge and Andaman Sky Lounge are the most popular. Sizzle, on the hills above Patong at Avista Hideaway, is the best for a steak dinner with a view. L’arome by the Sea on nearby Kalim Beach is also within easy reach of Patong.

Rooftop Bars in Phuket Town

Phuket Town does not have many rooftop bars, but the few that exist are worth visiting after a walk through the Old Town streets. Estrela on the 18th floor of the Novotel Phokeethra is the highest rooftop in Phuket Town with views across the city. Quip is the budget option: a small wooden platform on top of a shophouse hotel, with bean bags, fairy lights, and affordable drinks. Hilltop Cafe by Sinae on nearby Koh Siray also counts as a Phuket Town option since it is only a short drive from the Old Town.

Quip Sky Bar Rooftop

Quip Sky Bar is a lovely rooftop bar and restaurant at the top of the Quip Hotel in Phuket town. The hotel is original and fun to visit, with an old Austin car used as a reception counter. Since it is close to the historical streets of Phuket Town (Thalang Road, Dibuk Road and Phang Nga Road), it is an excellent way to cool down with a drink in an unexpected location. Don’t picture a sophisticated Bangkok rooftop bar here; it is a large wooden platform with incandescent lights hanging from wooden poles and comfy bean bags to crash in and look at the sky above. While the view from up there (and it’s not high either) is not particularly impressive, the result works well.

Phuket Rooftop Bars Through the Years

When I arrived in Phuket in the early 1990s, the only place you could get a drink with a panoramic view was After Beach Bar above Kata Noi Beach. It was a cheap reggae bar with plastic chairs and a Bob Marley theme, but the view over the bay was stunning. That was it. There were no rooftop bars and no reason to build any since a 1997 law limits building height near beaches to 12 metres, roughly the height of a coconut tree. What Phuket does have is hills, and that is where the rooftop bar scene eventually came from. Small bars and restaurants started appearing on hillsides and headlands, taking advantage of the elevation that buildings near the beach could never reach. Baba Nest at Sri Panwa changed everything around 2012. A full 360-degree terrace overlooking the islands of the southeast coast, with serious cocktails and a two-week waiting list. I only made it there around 2015 because it is far from everything, expensive, and you need to book well in advance. But the experience is unlike anything else on the island.

Insider Tips

Most Phuket rooftop bars are actually hillside bars. Locals call them rooftops because people immediately understand they will get panoramic views. The real gems are the quieter ones: Malika at Kalima Resort for the sunset over Patong Bay, Reflections at The Nai Harn for the view over the bay and Windmill Hill, and Akoya at V Villas for a more intimate evening. They are not too loud, and the views are superb. The louder, party-style rooftops have their place, but Phuket sunsets are best enjoyed without competing with a DJ.
