Rooftop in Karon Beach
The Dim Sun is the rooftop bar of Avista Grande Phuket Karon – MGallery, set on the top terrace of the hotel in the quieter northern end of Karon Beach. The setting is open, breezy and west-facing, with a long sightline over the rooftops down to the Andaman Sea. It opens late afternoon, runs through sunset, and stays open until late evening. The crowd is mixed: hotel guests coming up for a drink before dinner, couples on date night, and a few in-the-know locals who treat it as a sunset stop.
The Setting

The terrace sits above Portosino, the hotel’s main restaurant, and shares the same Sino-Portuguese design language as the rest of the property: arched details, soft pastel tones, and a calm, slightly nostalgic feel that nods to Old Phuket Town. Seating is split between low lounge furniture closer to the railing, where the sea view is best, and proper dining tables for those staying for a meal. The bar itself is compact but well-stocked, with the bartenders mixing in plain view.

The location works in its favour. Karon is one of the longer, calmer beaches on the west coast, and being slightly elevated means you get the full sweep of the sky at sunset without any high-rise blocking the horizon. On clear evenings, the sun drops straight into the sea. On cloudier ones, the colours can be even better.

The Food
The menu reads like a modern rooftop bar menu rather than a full restaurant, but the portions are generous and the kitchen takes it seriously. It’s structured around small plates to share, flatbreads, handhelds, and a short list of mains.
Signature plates worth ordering:
- Crab Omelette (ไข่เจียวปู) – a Thai-style fluffy omelette filled with crab meat, chilli jam and scallions. A Phuket classic done in a rooftop format.
- Gai Tod Phuket Golden Fried Chicken (ไก่ทอด) – free-range chicken marinated with coriander root, garlic and turmeric, served with caramelised shallots and tamarind chilli sauce.
- Crispy Soft-Shell Crab with Mango & Chilli – golden fried crab with sweet mango and a zesty chilli vinaigrette.
- Chilli-Garlic Andaman Prawns – tiger prawns in garlic chilli butter, one of the best things to pair with a cold drink.
- Rajasthani Tawa Lamb Chops – Indian-spiced pan-seared chops with mint chutney and pickled onion. A nod to the hotel’s Indian heritage.
The flatbreads (tandoori chicken, Andaman shrimp, truffle mushroom) and the wagyu smash burger are the easy crowd-pleasers if you’re sharing across a group. Lighter options include the pomelo and burrata salad, the tuna tataki, and an Asian quinoa bowl for vegetarians.
The Drinks
The cocktail list leans into Thai and Asian flavours: lemongrass, kaffir lime, Thai basil, tamarind, mango. There’s a proper wine list, decent spirits selection, and a happy hour window in the early evening that’s worth catching. Mocktails are well done, so non-drinkers and families aren’t left out.
The sunset hour is when the bar is at its best. Order something long and cold, find a seat facing west, and let the staff bring out a few small plates while the sky changes.
Who It Suits
The Dim Sun is a strong pick if you’re staying in Karon, Kata or Kata Noi and want a rooftop sunset without driving up to Patong or out to Kalim. It’s an easy taxi or scooter from anywhere on the south coast.

It works for couples on a romantic night out, small groups of friends sharing plates, and families with older kids who can sit through a longer meal. It’s not a party bar; the music is quiet, the lighting is soft, and conversations stay at table level.
Reservations are a good idea for sunset slots, especially between November and April. The terrace is open-air, so a passing shower in the green season can interrupt the evening.
How to Get There
The hotel sits on Luang Phor Chuan Road, just inland from the northern end of Karon Beach. From Karon Beach Road, it’s a five-minute walk uphill, or a one-minute taxi. From Kata it’s about ten minutes by car. From Patong, allow 20 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic, over Patong Hill.
