Where to Party in Patong at Night?

Patong is the only place in Phuket with a real nightlife scene, and it has been that way since the 1990s. Everything centres on Bangla Walking Street and the streets around it. The range goes from massive nightclubs with international DJs to tiny beer bars with silly games and a bell you should not ring (unless you want to buy drinks for everyone).

Beach clubs, rooftop bars, live music, go-go bars, night markets, and a famous ladyboy cabaret show fill out the rest. It is not as rowdy as Pattaya or Bangkok. During the high season (November to May), Patong stays lively until 2 am officially, but most places keep going past 4 am. I have been watching Bangla Road change since 1994, and the scale of what it has become still surprises me.

Bangla Walking Street

Bangla Road in Patong Beach

Bangla Walking Street, also called Soi Bangla or Bangla Road, is the heart of all Phuket Nightlife, and the battle for night supremacy is raging between Soi Seadragon and the new Tiger complex. Over the years, the centre of interest has been moving up and down Bangla Road depending on seasons and popularity, but the ever-changing face of Patong nightlife is worth a look. Of course, wherever you go in Bangla, friendly ladies will call you with a big smile and encourage you to have a drink and play a few silly bar games; everyone is welcome.

Beach Clubs

Barra Cuda Beach Club

Barra Cuda Beach Club Phuket in Patong Beach

Barra Cuda opened in 2024 on Patong Beach, right next to Impiana Hotel and a short walk from Bangla Road. I stopped by on a weekday afternoon and had the place almost to myself. The semi-circular pool faces the sea, with daybeds arranged around it in tiers. The design is sleek, lots of white and clean lines, and it photographs well. Minimum spend applies depending on where you sit. Beachside and VIP areas cost more. The menu covers Thai and Western dishes, and cocktails are well-made but pricey. By sunset, the vibe shifts. DJs start playing, the crowd fills in, and it turns into more of a party scene. Patong hasn’t had many proper beach clubs until recently, so Barra Cuda fills a gap.

Rooftop Bars

Patong has a handful of rooftop bars, and while they are not as high as Bangkok’s famous towers, the views over the bay are worth the visit. Most are best around sunset. I usually start the evening at one of these before heading down to Bangla Road later.

Kee Sky Lounge

KEE Sky Lounge Rooftop at the Kee Resort

The Kee Sky Lounge is a fun rooftop bar on the 6th and 7th floors of The Kee Resort, in the heart of Patong Beach, steps away from the famous Bangla Walking Street. The rooftop is designed like a cruise ship deck, and while it is not very high, it has a good atmosphere, and guests can enjoy fun cocktails with sunset views over the Andaman Sea.

Nightclubs in Patong

Past sunset, Patong Beach turns itself into a gigantic party town. And since not everyone enjoys the same type of party, there are many ways to enjoy the night, from rooftop bars to international nightclubs. Below are some of the best-known places, but walk around, and you will find an incredible array of bars and clubs.

Illuzion Phuket

Illuzion Night Club

Illuzion Phuket is one of the wildest places to party in Patong, and you really can’t miss it: it’s right in the heart of Bangla Road, blasting music and lights that spill out onto the street. This club is huge, with space for thousands of party lovers, and the vibe inside is electric from the moment you walk in.

Illuzion brings in some pretty big-name DJs, especially if you’re into EDM or hip-hop, and the stage shows are next level—with dancers, acrobats, and all kinds of crazy effects. If you want to level up your night, there are VIP zones and comfy lounges where you can hang out with friends and keep the drinks coming.

Sugar Club Phuket

Sugar Club in Patong is where you go when you’re in the mood for a real hip-hop night. Sitting right on Bangla Road, it’s easy to spot and hard to ignore with all the lights, bass, and energy pouring out of the entrance. It’s been around since 2019 and quickly became the spot for live shows, with big names showing up now and then, plus solid sets from local DJs who know how to get a crowd moving.

Inside, it’s all about the stage. The layout makes you feel close to the action, no matter where you stand. There’s also a mezzanine with VIP booths if you’re with a group or just want a bit of space. The vibe is lively but laid-back—more party and less pretentious.

Live Bands in Patong

Live bands are everywhere in Patong; thankfully, the sound and skills have improved greatly in recent years. It’s fierce competition, but not everyone can afford a great band, and some venues would do better concentrating on their food. The best live bars are, without a doubt, New York Music Bar and the famous Hard Rock Cafe.

New York Live Music Bar

New York Live Band Phuket

Live bands are getting increasingly popular around the island, and there is intense competition to catch the attention of the thousands of visitors walking up and down the famous Bangla Road. New York Live Music combines great bands, excellent sound and a catch light system. You can stand for a moment in front of each bar and decide which one you like best, and once you pick one, you can enjoy the concert for the price of one drink!

Shopping and Night Markets

Patong has two night markets and a massive shopping mall that stays open late. The markets are good for cheap food and souvenirs. Jungceylon is where you go when it rains or when you need air conditioning.

Go-Go bars of Phuket

The concept of Go-Go Bars in Soi Bangla doesn’t vary much between places. It always rotates around a few standard features. So what happens in there? Sofas and small tables are lined up around the room, sometimes on two levels, and they play loud music with flashing colourful lights. Read more

Inspect a Go Go bar (or two, or three)

Phuket Go Go Bars

You don’t have to feel guilty to look inside a Go Go Bar, usually a room with girls dancing with very little cloth on a central stage, and sometimes a show that might make your jaw drop. Once again, this is Phuket, and it’s pretty relaxed; many couples visit a Go Go bar out of curiosity to have a drink and a little story to tell once home. Anyway, remember, “What happens in Bangla stays in Bangla”.

Other Nightlife Spots

Beyond the clubs and bars, Patong has a few other evening experiences worth knowing about.

Paradise Complex Gay Street

gay-phuket-

For almost twenty years, the Phuket Gay party zone’s heart has been beating in the Paradise complex in Patong Beach. I don’t know if the fancy name influenced the choice of location, but it’s effortless to find, right at the foot of the ‘Paradise Hotel’, a 24-floor tower standing in the centre of Patong like a lighthouse, well, you get the picture. There used to be an impressive gay festival, but it stopped in 2017. Read more

Sit at any beer bar and ring the bell!

bell

Walk down Bangla Road or any side lanes to see countless tiny bars, all looking “Same Same but Different”. A beer bar is a U-shaped counter with colourful lights, loud music, a TV screen, a funny name you will have a hard time remembering, a few friendly girls and some silly bar games to play. But the bell hanging at each bar is NOT a game! It is a way to show your happiness and generosity! Ring it to pay a round of drinks to everyone around the bar! (expect 1,000 baht)

10 Tips to Spot a Ladyboy in Phuket

Phuket Ladyboys

Did you know that in Bangla Walking Street, those tall, slim, pretty and sexy ladies dancing with colourful outfits and feathers are what are locally called ladyboys? A ladyboy is a transvestite who is considered here a woman. They look very feminine and get a lot of attention. On Bangla Road, they perform their little act of “Look at me! I’m more feminine than your wife”. Remember that while they encourage you to take their photos, payment is always requested once the photo is taken.

Party and Hangover Drinks

thai energy drinks

Energy drinks are part of the daily landscape of Thailand. Convenience stores always dedicate several fridge shelves to those tiny bottles. Do they work? That might depend on which brand, but mostly, that will rely on you. If you are an Italian espresso drinker like me, that might give you a mild boost; for some, it’s an all-night-long kerosene. If you don’t know what these tiny bottles are, you might want to memorise some of the names! ‘Energy Drinks’ are used as mixers to help you party through the whole night, while ‘Hangover Drinks’ make the next day less miserable. Better safe than sorry!

Insider Tips

Start the evening at a rooftop bar for sunset drinks, then walk down to Bangla Road around 9 or 10 pm when the street comes alive. The clubs do not really get going until 11 pm or later, so there is no rush.

If you want to see a go-go bar out of curiosity, Suzy Wong’s on Soi Seadragon is the best known. Couples go all the time. Drink prices are normal. Just do not ring the bell.

For live music, New York Live Music Bar on Bangla Road consistently has the best bands. Stand outside for a minute and listen before committing. If you want something more familiar, Hard Rock Cafe is reliable.

Avoid tuk-tuks late at night. Prices double or triple after midnight. Use Grab or Bolt instead. If you are staying near Bangla Road, walk. Most of the good hotels in Patong are within 10 minutes on foot.

The bell at any beer bar means you are buying a round for everyone. It costs around 1,000 baht. Some tourists ring it without knowing. The bar staff will not stop you.

Patong Nightlife Through the Years

When I arrived in Phuket in 1994, Bangla Road was a short stretch with a handful of beer bars, a couple of go-go bars, and two or three nightclubs. Live bands played in open-air bars to small crowds. The street was not pedestrianised. Cars and motorbikes drove through while people sat on plastic stools drinking Singha. There was no Tiger complex, no Illuzion, no Soi Seadragon. The whole strip could be walked in two minutes.

I was working at the Banyan Tree in Bang Tao during the day and designing logos for dive centres at night. After finishing work at my small company Andaman Graphics, often past midnight, I would ride my motorbike down to Bangla to grab a late beer. The crowd was mostly European expats and a handful of tourists who had heard about Phuket from friends. It was informal, personal, and small enough that you recognised faces.

The real change started in the 2000s. Tiger opened its first version and quickly became a landmark. Then Soi Seadragon grew, Suzy Wong’s arrived, and the go-go bar scene shifted up a level. By 2010, Bangla was already famous internationally. Illuzion opened and brought nightclub production to a scale Phuket had never seen. The street was pedestrianised in the evenings and became a destination in itself.

Today, Bangla Road is unrecognisable from what I saw in 1994. Illuzion is ranked in DJ Mag’s Top 10 worldwide. Beach clubs line the shore. Rooftop bars have appeared on buildings that did not exist 10 years ago. The scene is bigger, louder, and more varied than ever. But the core of it has not changed. Bangla is still a walking street where people go to have fun, drink too much, and do things they will talk about for years.
