A Heritage Budget Hotel and Hostel in Phuket Town
Sound Gallery House is a small boutique hotel and hostel inside an 80-year-old Sino-Portuguese mansion on Vichitsongkram Road in Phuket Town. The building dates back to around 1940 and belonged to a local family who ran a music school. They restored it and opened it as a hotel in 2019. The location is about 1 km from the main Old Town streets, maybe a 10-15-minute walk to Thalang Road. Not right in the centre, but close enough. Free parking is a bonus since it’s hard to find in Old Town.

The Building

I visited mostly for the café and was surprised by how much is packed into this place. The main building is classic Ang Mor Lao architecture with white stucco walls, green stained glass windows and ornate Chinese-European details. Inside, there’s antique furniture everywhere, old family photos on the walls, a gramophone, vintage musical instruments and crystal chandeliers. It feels like walking into someone’s grandmother’s house. But a cool grandmother.
Sim Chan Café

The ground-floor café, Sim Chan, is the main draw for non-guests. They bake their own bagels and doughnuts fresh daily. The bagels are genuinely good, some of the best I’ve had in Phuket. Coffee is solid, too. The café opens at 8 am and closes at 6 pm. There’s also Torry’s homemade ice cream if you need something sweet.
ONYX Secret Bar
Behind the main building is a garden with a white gazebo and string lights. This is where ONYX Bar operates in the evenings, a “secret bar” serving craft cocktails. On Wednesday nights only, they run Mizulim, an omakase experience that needs advance booking. I didn’t get a chance to visit it yet, but I will revisit it soon
The Rooms

The hotel has just 4 rooms upstairs in the main house. They have names like Piano Suite and Saxophone Room.
The Dormitory

There’s also a 10-bed dormitory in a separate garden building for backpackers. The dorm is very welcoming and clean, with privacy curtains and lockers. The central area is vast, with a massive working table that makes it really convenient for budget travellers who need to work on their laptops. No pool, no gym.

Eating Near Sound Gallery House

What makes this location work well for budget travellers is the food nearby. Ta Tim Dim Sum, an excellent and inexpensive dim sum restaurant, is just across the street. Lor Rong Market is also very near, serving delicious local food at very low prices. Between the heritage mansion, the local food and the neighbourhood feel, staying here is a true Phuket experience.
