Kamala Beach has a quieter, more local feel than Patong or Kata, but there is plenty to do once you know where to look. The beach itself is long and wide, with a relaxed atmosphere that attracts families and couples. The small town behind the beach has a growing number of restaurants, from simple Thai food stalls along the main road to international options and hotel dining. Cafe del Mar and Pine Beach Bar are among the beach clubs that have put Kamala on the map for daytime socialising.
Most hotels and resorts sit along the beachfront or on the hillsides at either end of the bay. The southern end is where the larger resorts are, including the InterContinental Phuket and the Hyatt Regency. The town centre has smaller hotels, convenience shops, a few tailors, and massage places. A fresh market operates in the mornings near the mosque, and a walking street market runs on certain evenings during high season.

Kamala is on the west coast, between Patong (10 minutes south over the headland) and Bang Tao (10 minutes north). From Phuket Airport, the drive takes about 40 minutes via Route 4030. The Phuket Smart Bus stops in Kamala along the west coast route. Parking is available along the beach road and near the town centre.
I arrived in Phuket in 1994 and have never left... After travelling through 40+ countries and working with Club Med and Expedia, I launched Phuket 101 in 2011 to share what I've explored, discovered and learned. Everything here comes from personal experience, with my own photography and videos from across Thailand.View Author posts
