Beachfront Hotel in Kamala Beach

The Naka Phuket is a 5-star design hotel on the headland between Kamala and Patong, overlooking its own private Yae Beach. The resort is a member of the Design Hotels collection and stands out for its bold contemporary architecture. Glass-walled villas are cantilevered into the hillside, giving each one unobstructed views over the Andaman Sea towards Patong Bay. It is one of the few resorts in Phuket that combines a private beach with a forested hillside setting.

Location

The Naka sits on Yae Beach, surrounded by a steep, jungle-covered hillside on the cape that separates Kamala Beach from Patong Beach. The resort is only accessible through a single private road, which gives it a feeling of complete seclusion despite being just 10 minutes by car from both Kamala village and the northern end of Patong Beach.

The Naka Phuket

Phuket Airport is about 45 minutes away. The hotel can arrange transfers, or you can use Grab or Bolt, though taxis in both directions cost around 400 to 450 baht each way. The isolation is deliberate. This is a resort designed for people who want to stay in, not go out. The private Yae Beach at the foot of the property is less than 250 metres long, kept clean by the hotel, and rarely visited by anyone other than guests.

The Villas

The resort has around 90 villas, every one with a private pool. The architecture is striking. The villas are built with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and cantilevered out from the hillside, so you feel like you are floating above the treetops with the sea stretching out below. Villa types range from the compact Napa Suite (58 sqm, no pool but with beach views) up to a Four Bedroom Pool Villa for larger groups.

The most popular categories are the One Bedroom Pool Villas, available in Partial Seaview, Deluxe Ocean View, High Bay and Beachfront versions. The High Bay villas sit higher on the hill and have the most dramatic panoramic views. The Signature versions are the highest and most private. All villas come with air conditioning, an espresso machine, a minibar, a safety box, free Wi-Fi and a balcony or terrace. Two and three-bedroom villas are available for families, and the Three Bedroom Garden View option includes a private sauna.

Restaurants and Dining

The Naka Phuket

The hotel has two main dining venues. The Wiwa is an all-day restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a mix of Thai and international food. It sits at beach level with views across the water. The Meka is a sky lounge higher up on the hill, designed for evening cocktails and dinner with 360-degree sunset views over the bay. For something more personal, the hotel offers a romantic dinner setup on the beach or on a private terrace, as well as in-villa dining delivered to your room. The floating breakfast is popular. You order the night before, and it arrives on a tray that floats in your private pool. It looks great in photos, and the food is decent, too.

Facilities and Activities

The Naka on Yae Beach in Phuket Island

Beyond the beach and the villas, there is a main infinity pool, a Napa Spa offering Thai and oil massages, a fully equipped gym and yoga sessions. Private Thai boxing classes can also be arranged. SUP boards and kayaks are available on the beach. The hotel can organise day trips to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and other island tours. Weddings and events are held regularly on the beachfront and hillside terraces.

I arrived in Phuket in 1994 and have never left. After travelling through 40+ countries and working with Club Med and Expedia, where I created the Hotels.com Go Guides international travel guide with my team, I launched Phuket 101 in 2011 to share what I've explored, discovered and learned. Everything here comes from personal experience, with my own photography and videos from across Thailand.View Author posts
