A Budget Hotel in Old Phuket Town
The Rommanee Classic Guesthouse is a small budget guesthouse on Soi Romanee, the most photographed street in Old Phuket Town. The building is a restored Sino-Portuguese shophouse, roughly 80 years old, painted in the pastel tones that have made this narrow lane one of the island’s most popular spots for photography and pre-wedding shoots.

The guesthouse is run by Khun Ann, a Phuket native whose family descends from the Chinese immigrants who came to work the island’s tin mines generations ago. She restored the building and opened the original Rommanee Boutique Guesthouse in 2012, keeping many of the original features, including the wood flooring and the steep wooden staircase. There is no lift, so be prepared to carry your bags up. Guests check in through the small coffee shop on the ground floor, which is a charming touch.

Rooms are simple, clean, and well-decorated. Each has air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a private bathroom with hot water. At the back of the building, an open-roof area lets in natural light over a small koi pond and a lounging platform with cushions. A light breakfast is included.

What makes The Rommanee special is its location. Soi Romanee connects Thalang Road with Dibuk Road, putting you right in the centre of the old town. The Sunday Walking Street Market is a one-minute walk away. The best restaurants in Phuket Town, the street art, the Shrine of the Serene Light, and the old shophouses are all on your doorstep.

The street itself has a colourful past. A long time ago, Soi Romanee was Phuket Town’s red-light district, serving the Chinese workers who came to work the tin mines. Today, it is one of the most charming and photogenic lanes in Phuket. I have walked this street hundreds of times since the 1990s and watched it transform from abandoned ruins into the colourful cafe-lined lane it is now.
The rooms are simple but comfortable, with everything you need for a pleasant stay, including air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. It’s not luxurious, but it’s a solid option for anyone wanting a cosy, affordable place to rest. With its central location and affordable rates, it’s hard to beat for value in Old Town.
