Phuket or Krabi? Which destination is right for you?

Phuket and Krabi are only about 170 km apart by road (or 50 minutes by boat), but they offer very different holidays. Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, 48 km long, with 44 beaches, an international airport, hundreds of hotels, shopping malls, night markets, and some of the best nightlife in the country. Krabi is a mainland province with dramatic limestone cliffs, quieter beaches, fewer tourists, and a more laid-back atmosphere.

I have lived in Phuket since 1994 and visited Krabi more times than I can count. Sometimes I drive there for lunch, sometimes I stay a few nights when I want a change of pace. Both are excellent. The right choice depends entirely on what you want from your trip.

Beaches

Beaches in Phuket

Patong beach

Phuket has 44 beaches, most of them along the west coast. The range is enormous. Patong is the busiest, with beach chairs, vendors, and a party atmosphere behind it. Kata and Karon are wide, family-friendly bays with calm water during high season. Mai Khao in the north stretches for 11 km with almost nobody on it. And then there are hidden coves like Freedom Beach and Banana Beach that feel private. Phuket beaches are generally wider and more open than Krabi’s, with more infrastructure (restaurants, sun loungers, water sports) right on the sand.

Phra Nang Beach in Krabi

Krabi has fewer beaches, but the scenery is more dramatic. The limestone karsts rising from the sea create backdrops you simply won’t find in Phuket. Railay Beach is the star. It’s only accessible by longtail boat and surrounded by towering cliffs, making it one of the most photographed beaches in Thailand. Phra Nang Beach, at the southern tip of Railay, has a cave shrine and crystal-clear water. Ao Nang is the main tourist hub, convenient but not the prettiest beach. Tubkaek Beach is quieter, with luxury resorts and views of the Hong Islands. Overall, Krabi beaches feel more “tropical postcard” while Phuket beaches are more practical and varied.

Things to Do

Things to Do in Phuket

Phuket Big Buddha

Phuket has far more activities than Krabi. The Big Buddha is 45 metres tall with panoramic views. Wat Chalong is one of the most revered temples in southern Thailand. Old Phuket Town has Sino-Portuguese architecture, street art, cafes, and local food. For day trips, Phang Nga Bay by kayak is one of the best experiences in Southeast Asia, and Phi Phi Islands are 90 minutes by speedboat. Add water parks, beach clubs, night markets, viewpoints, and cooking classes, and you won’t run out of things to do even in two weeks.

Things to Do in Krabi

Railay Beach in Krabi

Krabi is more about nature and adventure than cultural sightseeing. The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) has over 1,200 steps to the top, and the view from the summit is worth the effort. Rock climbing on Railay’s cliffs is world-class and draws climbers from around the globe. Kayaking through mangroves, jungle trekking, and island hopping are the main activities. The Emerald Pool and Hot Springs in the Krabi hinterland are popular half-day trips. Krabi has less organised entertainment than Phuket (no water parks, fewer shows, limited shopping), but if you prefer outdoor adventures over tourist attractions, Krabi has a lot to offer.

Nightlife

Phuket Nightlife

Bangla Walking Street in Patong Beach, Phuket

Phuket wins this category easily. Bangla Road in Patong is one of the most famous nightlife streets in Asia. Beyond that, Phuket has beach clubs, rooftop bars with sunset views, live music venues, and clubs open late. Each beach area has its own nightlife character. Patong is intense, Kata is relaxed, Bang Tao is upmarket. You can have a completely different night out depending on where you go.

Krabi Nightlife

Krabi is quiet at night. Ao Nang has a handful of bars along the main road, some with live music and fire shows on the beach. Railay has a few beach bars where you can drink under the stars. Krabi Town has a small nightlife scene around Chao Fah Pier. But there are no clubs, no go-go bars, and nothing that comes close to Bangla Road. If you want a quiet evening with a drink by the sea, Krabi is perfect. If you want options and energy, Phuket is the only choice.

Food and Dining

Phuket Dining

Kata Beach Restaurants

Phuket has one of the strongest food scenes in Thailand outside Bangkok. Southern Thai food here is spicier and bolder than what you find further north, with more chilli, turmeric, and seafood. The range goes from tiny local restaurants serving 60-baht dishes to Michelin-listed restaurants. Phuket Town has some of the best local food, and the Sunday Walking Street is excellent for street food. International cuisine is well represented too, with Japanese, Italian, Indian, and Middle Eastern restaurants across the island.

Krabi Dining

Railay Beach Bars and Restaurants

Krabi has a smaller dining scene, but the food is good value. Ao Nang’s main strip has a mix of Thai and international restaurants at reasonable prices. Krabi Town has excellent local food at the night markets, especially the Friday and Saturday Walking Streets. Railay has a few beachfront restaurants where you eat with sand between your toes. The food quality is decent but less varied than Phuket. You won’t find Michelin restaurants or the same range of international cuisines, but for casual Thai food and fresh seafood at lower prices, Krabi holds its own.

Hotels and Accommodation

Hotels in Phuket

Best Luxury Resorts in Phuket

Phuket has hundreds of hotels across every price range. From 500-baht hostels in Patong to 50,000-baht-per-night pool villas on Mai Khao, the variety is unmatched in southern Thailand. You can stay in a historical guesthouse in Phuket Town, a luxury resort in Bang Tao, or a budget room near Patong Beach. The international hotel brands (Marriott, Hilton, Banyan Tree, Anantara) are well represented.

Best Luxury Hotels in Krabi

Krabi has fewer hotels but some are exceptional. Rayavadee on Railay is one of the most famous luxury resorts in Thailand, set in a tropical garden between two beaches. Phulay Bay (Ritz-Carlton Reserve) on Tubkaek Beach is stunning. Ao Nang has a good range of mid-range and budget hotels within walking distance of the beach and restaurants. Railay itself has limited options (Rayavadee at the top, basic bungalows at the budget end), so book early during high season. Overall, Krabi accommodation tends to be a little cheaper than Phuket at similar quality levels.

Getting There

Getting to Phuket

Phuket International Airport (HKT) has direct flights from cities across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. London, Moscow, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Hong Kong all have direct connections. Domestic flights from Bangkok take about 1 hour 20 minutes and start from 1,500 Baht one way with budget airlines. The airport is well-connected, and getting to your hotel is straightforward with taxis, minivans, and the Smart Bus.

Getting to Krabi

Krabi International Airport (KBV) is smaller than Phuket’s but has improved in recent years. There are direct flights from Bangkok (about 1 hour 20 minutes, from 1,200 Baht), Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Fewer international connections than Phuket, but enough for most travellers. You can also reach Krabi by road from Phuket in about 2.5 to 3 hours (170 km), or by ferry from Phuket’s Rassada Pier to Ao Nang in about 2 hours during high season.

Koh Lanta, about 70 km south, is a popular add-on destination with long, quiet beaches and a relaxed backpacker vibe. Koh Yao Noi sits between Phuket and Krabi and is one of the most peaceful islands in the region.

Shopping

Jungceylon Mall in Patong Beach, Phuket

Phuket has two large malls (Central Phuket and Jungceylon), plus excellent night markets in Phuket Town. The Sunday Walking Street and Chillva Market are popular for local products, street food, and atmosphere. For an island, Phuket’s shopping is surprisingly good.

Insider Tips

The most important thing to understand is that Phuket is a complete destination. You can spend two weeks there and not run out of things to do. Krabi is better as a focused trip: beaches, nature, and relaxation. If you have a week, Phuket alone is enough. If you have 10 days or more, combining both is ideal.

Krabi is closer to Phi Phi than Phuket is. If Phi Phi is high on your list, staying in Krabi cuts the boat time significantly. The same applies to Koh Lanta, which is easy to reach from Krabi but requires a longer journey from Phuket.

The drive between Phuket and Krabi takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. The road is mostly highway and easy to drive. You can also take the ferry during high season (November to April), which lands you directly at Ao Nang. During low season, the ferry service is reduced or stopped.

Krabi accommodation is generally cheaper than Phuket for the same quality level. A 4-star resort in Krabi often costs what a 3-star hotel in Phuket costs. The difference is biggest during peak season (December to January).

FAQs: Phuket vs Krabi

Phuket is better for most first-timers. It has more variety in beaches, restaurants, activities, and nightlife. The international airport makes it easier to reach. Krabi is better if you specifically want quiet beaches, rock climbing, or a more relaxed, nature-focused trip.

Generally yes. Hotels, restaurants, and activities tend to cost 10-30% less in Krabi than in Phuket at similar quality levels. The biggest savings are on accommodation during peak season. Flights to Krabi from Bangkok are also slightly cheaper (from about 1,200 Baht vs 1,500 Baht to Phuket).

Yes, and it’s a popular combination. The drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. During high season, ferries run between Phuket and Ao Nang in about 2 hours. A good split is 4-5 days in Phuket for sightseeing, day trips, and nightlife, then 3-4 days in Krabi for beaches and relaxation. You can also fly into one and out of the other to avoid backtracking.

It depends on what you’re looking for. Phuket has 44 beaches with more variety, from busy resort beaches to hidden coves. Krabi has fewer beaches but the scenery is more dramatic, with limestone cliffs and karsts. Railay Beach in Krabi is one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. For sheer variety, Phuket wins. For jaw-dropping backdrops, Krabi wins.

Both work well. Phuket has more romantic restaurants, rooftop bars, and luxury spas. Krabi offers more natural seclusion, with Railay being one of the most romantic settings in Thailand. For honeymoons with variety, choose Phuket. For a quiet, intimate escape, Krabi is hard to beat. Many couples combine both.
