Wat Suwan Khiri Wong (เธงเธฑเธเธชเธธเธงเธฃเธฃเธเธเธตเธฃเธตเธงเธเธเน), also known as Wat Patong, is a prominent Buddhist temple located at the base of the hill leading into Patong Beach, along Phra Barami Road in Kathu District, Phuket. The temple spans approximately 17 rai and is bordered by a canal and the foothills of Patong Mountain. Key structures within the temple complex include the main ordination hall (ubosot), a sermon hall, a bell tower, monksโ residences, and a shrine housing a replica of the Buddhaโs footprint. The templeโs architecture features traditional Thai elements, with intricate carvings and a golden pagoda that enshrines sacred relics. Despite its location near the bustling Patong area, the temple offers a serene atmosphere for visitors seeking spiritual reflection.โ
Established in 1769, the temple was originally named โWat Pa Tong,โ reflecting the name of the local village. It later received the name โWat Suwan Khiri Wong,โ meaning โGolden Mountain Temple.โ The temple obtained its first royal charter in 1892, with the most recent issued in 1988. Over the years, Wat Suwan Khiri Wong has played a significant role in the community, serving as a centre for Buddhist education and cultural preservation.
