A French restaurant and bistro in old Phuket Town
CaVa Bien Marché (which is pronounced sava) is a casual restaurant and bistro on Dibuk Road in Old Phuket Town. The food is good and the layout attractive. The restaurant uses a typical Phuket shophouse and therefore is very long and narrow. The restaurant is divided in four sections: the entrance the food display room, the garden and another dinning room with large tables for groups and a counter.
Inspired by a popular fresh market in Bordeaux, France, the restaurant has a lot of seafood, cheeses and cold cuts on display. You can choose a platter of cheeses of your choice: 3 items at 459 baht, 5 items at 759 baht, or 7 items at 1,059 baht. The items on the seafood platter at 790 baht depend on what is available each day at the local market. We treated ourselves with some excellent Marennes D’Oleron oysters No3, directly imported from that small island on the west coast of France (453 baht for 3 and get one free)
If you feel like going for a full meal, the menu is very attractive and well described, making the experience even more interesting. Onions soup with croutons and cheese on top is a delicious classic way to start a meal (270 baht). The creme brulée au fois gras is more creative (390 baht). Of course, a French restaurant would be incomplete with those escargots in garlic butter ! 320 baht).
CaVa Bien Marche also serves a good selection of salads and pastas: Spaghetti Pistou (270 baht), Penne Pasta Bechamel (290 baht) and Tagliatelle seafood with cognac sauce (290 baht). Meat lovers will be pleased with the choice of meats on offer: fillet de boeuf, Entrecote, which is a 150 days Australian ribeye grass fed, , tomahawk (320 baht/1000 grr`), lamb (990 baht), kurobuta (390 baht) and duck (470 baht). If meat is not for you, try the seafood grill: Saint Jacques, or scallops, with truffle and garlic (690 baht), squid with Armoricaine sauce (370 baht) or fish of the day.
The food is excellent, skilfully prepared and reasonably priced, a good alternative if you feel like a change from Thai cuisine. Ca Va Bien Marché is a good place to enjoy a French bistro like lunch or dinner to relax with friend once you finished your exploration of the old Phuket streets.
