HEH Restaurant Review
HEH is a new restaurant on the outskirts of Phuket Town run by a young team and passionate and creative Thai chef Oat (Nattaphon Othanawathakij). The restaurant is not too big, well-designed with high windows, unpretentious, and welcoming. There is even a tree growing right in the middle of it.
Since HEH made it into the Michelin Guide for Phuket, we thought it was better to book in advance. As it was mid-week, the restaurant was busy but not full. The team welcomed us in a friendly manner and answered our questions about the dishes on the menu, as many items were new to us.
What We Ordered
HEH Restaurant collaborates with local fishermen for fresh catches and uses imported Australian ingredients, dry-ageing and processing their fish in-house to enhance flavour and tenderness.
The menu is short and changes frequently, and each item is tempting and clearly described. We started with Fish Tacos because it was unusual, and this is the kind of restaurant where you want to try what they are creative about.
Fish Tacos: beer-battered fish, smoked corn salsa, tartar sauce, lettuce, cheese (219 baht)
Charcoaled Grilled Calamari with hot and spicy soy sauce and lime mayo (249 baht)
Fish Crudo (Special Menu): Aged Starry Emperor with smoked pineapple vinaigrette, salsa, crispy leak and Ikura (499 baht)
Charred Broccoli with anchovy and fish scales (249 baht)
Aged Giant Trevally Ceviche (special menu): Giant Trevally with Chilli, puffed rice and squid ink whipped (299 baht)
Who is Chef Oat?
Chef Oat, Nattaphon Othanawathakij, lived in Melbourne for almost 10 years, gaining experience in casual and fine dining restaurants, and catering for events like the Australian Open, Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, and Melbourne Cup Carnival. Returning to Thailand, he worked at a restaurant ranked No. 5 in the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” and No. 1 in “Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.” In 2019, he co-founded HEH in Phuket, inspired by the opportunities offered by the Andaman Sea. Chef Oat led his team to victory as a Winning Challenger Chef on The Iron Chef Thailand in 2021 and was part of the winning team on Top Chef Thailand 2023.
Our dinner was superb, and the price was reasonable considering the freshness of the locally sourced products and, most of all, the excellent balance of taste and texture in every single dish. We didn’t know what to expect when we visited HEH, and we were delighted. This is one of the best restaurants in Phuket Town, and you should try it if you get a chance!
Note: The restaurant is on a road without parking spaces, so if you come with a car, park it at the music school just next to it, or in the large parking lot of the Phuket Merlin Hotel across the street!
