Wat Chalong Photo Gallery
Wat Chalong is the most important Buddhist temple in Phuket. The temple complex sits in the Chalong area in the south of the island and is the most visited temple by both tourists and local worshippers. The main building is the Grand Pagoda, a tall structure decorated with murals depicting the life of Buddha.
Inside, the walls are covered in detailed paintings, and the upper floors offer views over the surrounding countryside. The older prayer halls in the compound contain statues of revered monks, including Luang Pho Chaem, who helped locals during a rebellion in the 19th century. The temple grounds are well-maintained, with paved paths, small gardens, and a few souvenir stalls near the entrance.
Wat Chalong is easy to combine with a visit to the Big Buddha, which is just a short drive up the hill.
I have been photographing Wat Chalong since the mid-1990s, well before the Grand Pagoda was built. The photos in this gallery show the temple complex at different stages, from the original prayer halls to the completed pagoda. Some of the earlier shots show how much the site has changed over the decades. All photos are my own. For the full travel guide, see Wat Chalong.
