Wat Kanan

Phuketโ€™s White Temple

Wat Kanan is Phuketโ€™s striking white Buddhist temple, often referred to as the islandโ€™s answer to the famous Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) in Chiang Rai. Located in the Thalang area of Phuket, this relatively new and lesser-known temple has recently gained attention as a stunning spiritual and architectural destination.

Location

Wat Kanan - The White Temple of Phuket

The temple is situated in the Thalang district of Phuket and is surrounded by lush jungle, providing a serene and peaceful environment away from typical tourist crowds. Its most distinctive feature is the immaculate ubosot (ordination hall) standing directly on the water, with its white dome beautifully reflected in the mirror-like surface of the surrounding lake.

Construction & Development

Construction of Wat Kanan began approximately ten years ago, though progress has been gradual. Unlike many temples that receive substantial government or institutional funding, this project relies solely on donations from devotees, which explains the phased approach to its development. Despite the slower pace, the completed sections showcase remarkable architectural detail and craftsmanship.

Architectural & Spiritual Features

The temple complex combines aesthetic beauty with spiritual significance:

The Ubosot:

The main attraction features pristine white architecture reflected in the surrounding waters, creating a meditative atmosphere. The structure represents purity and spiritual awakening in Buddhist tradition.

Museum & Religious Spaces:

The ubosot is a multi-level structure. The first floor houses a museum displaying archaeological artefacts discovered in the area, including objects from ancient cultures and a statue from the late Ayutthaya period (over 200 years old). The second floor is reserved for prayer and religious ceremonies and contains the templeโ€™s main Buddha statue.

Nine Hero Statues:

A notable feature of the complex is a set of nine hero statues to which locals bring offerings. These chapels are built in the Maha Ut architectural style, which, according to ancient beliefs, can purify a person from negative energy and provide protection from black magic.

Natural Setting & Sacred Waters

The pond surrounding Wat Kanan is teeming with life, populated by fish and turtles that swim peacefully in its waters. Feeding these animals is considered a good omen that brings luck to visitors. This integration of wildlife and spiritual practice creates a harmonious environment that enhances the meditative quality of the site.

Atmosphere & Why Visit

Wat Kanan - The White Temple of Phuket

What makes Wat Kanan exceptional is not merely its architecture but the overall atmosphere it creates. The white lines of the building blend harmoniously with the lush green tropical vegetation and deep blue sky, creating an environment that โ€œbreathes serenity and light.โ€ As a relatively undiscovered destination, visitors can still experience the temple without large crowds of tourists or tour groups, allowing for a more authentic and contemplative experience.

Renting Costumes

A fun addition to any Wat Kanan visit is the traditional Thai costume rental shop located in front of the temple. For just 200 baht per person, visitors can wear authentic Thai silk outfits and ornate brocades, transforming their visit into an immersive cultural experience. The beautiful white architecture and elaborate carved pillars create a stunning backdrop for photographs in traditional dress.

This affordable and unique activity has become one of the templeโ€™s most popular attractions, allowing guests to capture treasured memories while experiencing Thai heritage firsthand. Itโ€™s an unforgettable way to connect with the temple and take some great memories home.
