A popular selfie café in Old Phuket Town
Aungku Phuket is a cafe that literally popped up in a couple of months at the intersection of two famous streets of the Old Phuket Town: Thalang Road, where the Sunday Walking Market is held, and the small Soi Romanee which is so popular with Instagrammers.
The place has obviously been designed to attract selfie lovers: the brand-new two-storey building uses the same Sino-Portuguese architecture as the old shophouses lining up the street and is covered with mirrors and fake pink flowers. You can walk by the coffee shop at any time of the day and evening and a little crowd of people are posing in front of the floral decoration! It’s quite a sight.
Inside Aungku Phuket
Ironically, while hundreds of people pose and shoot themselves endlessly all day, the shop is not so busy inside. Guests can sit on the ground floor, or access the more spacious second floor via outside stairs.
On the plus side, the second floor is beautifully decorated and offers comfortable sitting, offering a fun playground to take more photos. On the downside, the staff communicates and places your order using a very loud talkie walkie, and the loud back-and-forth communications spoil the beautiful atmosphere.
What to order
The coffee shop serves beautifully crafted cakes, pastries and colourful sweets often decorated with flowers and fruits: rainbow cake (139 baht), waffles (189 baht), caramel toast (159 baht), Tiramisu (179 baht), orange cake (129 baht), choux creme (139 baht) and Vanilla fruit cake (159 baht). They also serve some Phuket specialities, as well as drinks, teas and coffees (no alcohol is served).
