Phuket Big Buddha Photo Gallery
The Big Buddha is a 45-metre-high white marble statue sitting on top of Nakkerd Hill in southern Phuket. The statue is visible from many parts of the island and has become one of Phuket’s most recognisable landmarks. Construction started around the year 2000, and the site is still slowly moving toward completion.
The drive up to the Big Buddha follows a steep, winding road through the jungle. At the top, the views stretch in every direction. On one side, you can see Chalong Bay and the southern islands. On the other hand, the hills roll toward the west coast beaches. The site is a working temple, so visitors should dress respectfully.
Important: The Big Buddha has been closed since August 2024 following a landslide. You can still drive most of the way up the hill, but access to the statue itself is restricted.
I first photographed the Big Buddha site in the early 2000s when construction had just started, and there was almost nothing at the top of the hill. The photos in this gallery show the statue and the views at different stages of construction over the past two decades. It is interesting to see how the site has evolved. All photos are my own. For the full travel guide, see Big Buddha Phuket.
