Phuket Big Buddha
The Big Buddha is a 45-metre-high white marble statue sitting on top of Nakkerd Hill in southern Phuket. The statue is visible from many parts of the island and has become one of Phuket’s most recognisable landmarks. Construction started around the year 2000, and the site is still slowly moving toward completion.
The drive up to the Big Buddha follows a steep, winding road through the jungle. At the top, the views stretch in every direction. On one side, you can see Chalong Bay and the southern islands. On the other hand, the hills roll toward the west coast beaches. On very clear days, Phang Nga Bay is visible to the north.
The site is a working temple, so visitors should dress respectfully. Sarongs are available to borrow at the entrance for those wearing shorts or sleeveless tops. Entry is free, though donations are welcome.
Important: The Big Buddha has been closed since August 2024 following a landslide. You can still drive most of the way up the hill, but access to the statue itself is restricted. For the full guide, see Big Buddha Phuket.
