Kayaking in Phang Nga Bay
Phang Nga Bay is a large, sheltered bay north of Phuket, filled with hundreds of limestone karsts rising straight out of the calm green water. The bay covers a massive area and is one of the most scenic natural landscapes in Southeast Asia.
The most popular way to explore Phang Nga Bay is by boat, either a traditional longtail or a speedboat. Day tours from Phuket typically include kayaking through sea caves and mangrove tunnels, a stop at James Bond Island, and lunch at the floating Muslim village of Koh Panyi.
The sea caves are a highlight. Many of the karsts are hollow inside, and at the right tide level, you can paddle through narrow openings into hidden lagoons surrounded by sheer rock walls. These are called “hongs” in Thai, and some of them are spectacular.
The bay is calm year-round, so it is one of the few excursions from Phuket that works well even during the monsoon season. Morning departures are best for the calmest water and the best light. For the full guide, see Phang Nga Bay.
