A Modest Thai Temple on Mai Khao Beach
Wat Mai Khao (วัดไม้ขาว) is a peaceful Buddhist temple located in the Mai Khao area of Thalang District, Phuket. Established on August 24, 1955, by Ms. Bee Plaekrit, who donated her land for its construction, the temple officially became a recognised religious site in 1957.
The temple is affiliated with the Dhammayuttika Nikaya, a monastic order known for its strict adherence to monastic discipline. It has served as a centre for Vipassana meditation, attracting monks dedicated to deepening their practice.
A notable figure in the temple’s history is Phra Khru Nat Thammarat (Luang Pho Daeng), who served as abbot until his passing in 2012. His contributions to the temple and community are commemorated annually, with a memorial pavilion housing his likeness situated at the rear of the temple grounds.
Visitors to Wat Mai Khao can experience the serene atmosphere of the temple, participate in daily chanting and meditation sessions, and observe the monks’ disciplined routines. The temple grounds also feature a bird sanctuary in the back, near the beach, providing a tranquil environment for reflection.
