A Heritage Family Restaurant Opens in Phuket’s Historic Heart
TOH DAENG at Phuket Old Town is the new sister restaurant of the main Toh Daeng, which sits inside the heritage Baan Ar Jor mansion up at Mai Khao Beach. We’ve known this little shophouse for years as a simple, unremarkable café located on Dibuk Road, but it just got a real new life! Now, the restaurant stands out in that same dark red tone as the original, with matching red tables, no surprise since “Toh Daeng” means “Red Table.”
Everything feels refreshed and stylish. The dining room is small, full of vintage items and family photos that tell stories from the past. Just like the main Toh Daeng up north, this new venue is all about family heritage. It’s worth mentioning that the main restaurant in Mai Khao has been listed in the Phuket Michelin Guide for several years.
What’s Inside
There’s a little backyard garden you should check out, too. We noticed they kept the traditional cooking station that’s classic for old Phuket shophouses. It’s one of those subtle details that ties the past and present together.
Who’s Behind the Renovation
Just like Baan Ar Jor, Toh Daeng in town is also a passion project of Khun Todd, the owner’s grandson. He’s invested incredible effort into restoring the family heritage. Khun Todd even revealed to us that the huge heritage mansion next door that we knew as Luang Amnart Nararak Mansion (Dibuk Mansion), one of Phuket’s most stunning yet neglected heritage homes, belongs to the same family!
Our Visit
During our last visit, the restaurant wasn’t serving food yet. We’re definitely coming back soon. With the family’s track record, we wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes Phuket’s next Michelin Thai spot.
