Sports and Fitness in Phuket
Phuket has a well-established fitness and sports scene that goes well beyond hotel gyms and beach volleyball. The island attracts a large community of long-stay residents and returning visitors who train year-round, which means the facilities are better than you might expect from a holiday destination.
Muay Thai camps are among the most popular draws, with training camps in Chalong, Rawai, and near Patong that cater to beginners through to professional fighters. CrossFit and functional training gyms have multiplied in recent years, and several full-service fitness clubs offer day passes for visitors who want to keep their routine going during their trip.
On the water, surfing picks up on the west coast beaches during the monsoon season (May to October), with Kata Beach being the most popular spot for beginners. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and jet skiing are available at most major beaches during the dry season. Scuba diving and snorkelling operate year-round from Chalong Pier, with day trips to nearby reefs and islands.
On land, yoga studios and retreat centres are found across the island, from Rawai to Kamala. Golf courses include several championship-level layouts, and go-karting, shooting ranges, and ATV trails add more options for those who prefer something with a bit more adrenaline. Tennis and padel courts have also become more common, with several clubs now offering hourly bookings.
