Where to Stay in Phuket: Karon or Bang Tao?
Karon Beach and Bang Tao Beach sit on the same west coast of Phuket, about 30 km apart, but they attract very different travellers. Karon is a long, quiet beach backed by a small town with local restaurants, a temple market, and a handful of bars. Bang Tao is a sprawling destination built around the Laguna Phuket resort complex, with beach clubs, upscale dining at Boat Avenue, and a more polished atmosphere overall.
Both beaches share something uncommon in Phuket: space. Karon Beach stretches over 3 km, and Bang Tao Beach over 6 km, so neither feels crowded even in high season. The difference is what you find behind the sand. Karon is simpler and more affordable, with budget guesthouses in the town and large resorts across the road from the beach. Bang Tao leans toward luxury, with beachfront resorts, international restaurants, and a lifestyle infrastructure that has grown rapidly in recent years.
I have a personal connection to both beaches. My first job in Phuket was at the Banyan Tree Resort in Bang Tao in 1994. Laguna Phuket at the time had five resorts and nothing else around them. No Boat Avenue, no beach clubs, no restaurants outside the hotels. Getting there every day on a small motorcycle was quite an adventure, especially on rainy days. Karon was equally quiet back then, a huge empty beach with a small river where buffaloes bathed in the afternoon. It is remarkable how much both places have changed and how different the paths they took are.
| Update: Songkran Festival is on April 13 to 15 this year. If you are planning to visit Phuket in April, book early. Hotels in Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, and Bangtao fill up fast during this period, some hotels are already fully booked. |
Overview
Who is Karon Beach for?

Karon Beach works well for families and couples who want a large, quiet beach without the price tag of a luxury resort area. The beach itself is one of the longest in Phuket, with soft white sand that squeaks under your feet. Most hotels are across the road from the beach, which keeps the shoreline feeling natural and uncrowded.
The small town of Karon is set back from the beachfront hotels, which means you might need a tuk-tuk or shuttle to reach restaurants and shops. Budget travellers who book in the town itself will find everything within walking distance. Karon is also well positioned between Kata Beach (600 m south) and Patong Beach (15 minutes by car), making it a good base for exploring the south coast.
Pros:
- Long (3.5 km), wide beach that never feels crowded, even in high season.
- More affordable than Bang Tao, with good budget and mid-range hotel options.
- A growing beachfront promenade with restaurants and bars along the roadside.
- Family-friendly resorts with excellent facilities, including Centara Grand and Pullman.
- Close to Kata Beach and Patong for more dining, shopping, and nightlife.
Cons:
- The town is separated from most beachfront hotels, often requiring a tuk-tuk or shuttle.
- No beach clubs and limited upscale dining compared to Bang Tao.
- Nightlife is modest, with only small beer bars and live music spots.
- Further from the airport (45 km) than Bang Tao (17 km).
Who is Bang Tao Beach for?

Bang Tao Beach attracts visitors looking for a more refined beach experience. The beach stretches over 6 km, making it nearly twice as long as Karon, and even during high season you can find completely deserted sections of sand. The area has developed into a sophisticated destination with world-class beach clubs, upscale dining at Boat Avenue, and the integrated Laguna Phuket resort complex.
Families will find some of the best kids’ clubs in Phuket at the Laguna resorts, with safe swimming areas and a peaceful atmosphere. Couples appreciate the sunset dining options and luxury accommodations. Bang Tao is also only 17 km from Phuket Airport, roughly half the distance from Karon, making it more convenient for shorter stays.
Pros:
- Beautiful 6 km beach that never feels crowded, even in peak season.
- Best beach clubs in Phuket, including Catch Beach Club, Xana, and RAVA.
- Excellent family facilities with world-class kids’ clubs at Laguna resorts.
- Sophisticated dining scene at Boat Avenue with dozens of restaurants.
- Only 20 to 30 minutes from Phuket Airport, much closer than Karon.
Cons:
- Attractions are spread out, requiring transportation between locations.
- Higher prices overall for accommodation, dining, and beach services.
- Increasing traffic congestion in the Cherngtalay area.
- Less budget-friendly accommodation compared to Karon.
The Beaches
The Beach of Karon

Karon Beach stretches over 3 km along the west coast, making it one of the longest beaches on the island. The sand is wide and white, and famous for making a squeaky sound under your feet. Scientists say it happens when the grains are round, uniform, and clean enough to rub together at the right frequency. Visitors just find it fun. It is one of those small details people always bring up when they come back from Karon.
Beach loungers and umbrellas are available for rent, but they cover a smaller portion of the beach than at busier beaches, so the atmosphere is more natural. A wide road runs along the beachfront, and most hotels sit across this road rather than directly on the sand. Only Centara Grand Beach Resort, Beyond Karon, and Marina Cottage have direct beach access.
The north end of the beach, near the roundabout, has a cluster of local seafood restaurants by the lake. The south end connects to Kata Beach via a short walk along the promenade. During the high season (November to April), the sea is calm with clear water. In the low season, strong waves and rip currents make swimming dangerous. Read More!
The Beach of Bang Tao

Bang Tao Beach stretches over 6 km along the west coast, nearly twice as long as Karon. The crescent-shaped bay has light yellowish-grey sand, finer at the southern end near the Laguna resorts and coarser toward the north. The most striking difference from Karon is how empty it can feel. Walk 10 minutes in either direction and you might have a section of beach entirely to yourself.
The water is clean, though it has a slightly murky appearance from the silty bottom. Swimming conditions are excellent during high season, with gradual entry and no rocks. During low tide at the northern and southern sections, you may need to walk 50 metres or more through shallow water to reach swimming depth.
Casuarina trees line much of the beach, providing natural shade. The sunsets at Bang Tao are spectacular, with the sun dropping directly into the Andaman Sea. The southern section is where you will find the Laguna Phuket resorts and the famous beach clubs, including Catch Beach Club, Xana at Angsana, Casuarina, and RAVA Beach Club. From May to October, Bang Tao becomes a good surf spot. Read More!
The Hotels
The Hotels in Karon Beach

Karon is known for large family-oriented resorts, many of them positioned just across the road from the beach. Some properties cover enormous grounds, so even if your hotel sounds close to the sand, you might walk through extensive gardens to reach it. Only three hotels have direct beach access: Centara Grand Beach Resort, Beyond Karon, and Marina Cottage.
Centara Grand is one of the most popular family resorts in Phuket, with a water park, lazy river, and kids’ club. Pullman Phuket Arcadia is another large resort with five pools. For mid-range options, Paradox Resort (formerly Mövenpick) and Avista Grande offer good value. Budget hotels and guesthouses cluster in the Karon town area, close to restaurants and nightlife. Le Meridien Phuket sits on its own private beach at Karon Noi, just north of the main beach.

The Hotels in Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao’s accommodation is dominated by the Laguna Phuket complex, an integrated resort development with over 1,400 rooms across six hotels: Banyan Tree Phuket, Angsana Laguna Phuket, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, SAii Laguna Phuket, Homm Suites, and Cassia Phuket. Guests at any Laguna hotel can use the free shuttle bus and boat service between properties, access the championship golf course, and dine at any of the 30+ restaurants within the complex.
Bangtao Beach hotels are among the most family-friendly in Phuket, with the Laguna resorts and nearby 4-star properties offering large pools and kids’ activities. Budget accommodation is harder to find in Bang Tao than in Karon, but the Cherngtalay area behind the beach has guesthouses and smaller hotels at more moderate prices.

Things to Do and Activities
What to Do in Karon Beach

Karon is a place to slow down. The beach is the main attraction: swim, walk the shoreline, rent a lounger, or get a beach massage under the trees. In the evening, the beachfront promenade comes alive as visitors stroll between Kata and Karon town, stopping at the restaurants and bars along the roadside.
The Karon Temple Market runs twice a week with street food, souvenirs, and a local atmosphere that feels more authentic than most tourist markets in Phuket. Dino Park Mini Golf, located between Karon and Kata, is good family fun. Parasailing and jet skis are available on the beach, though not recommended.
Karon’s nightlife is modest. There are beer bars and live music spots near the Karon Circle and along Patak Road, including The Garage OG, a popular live band bar. For many visitors, the quiet evenings are exactly the point. Kata Beach is a short walk south for more dining, and Patong is only 15 minutes away by car for a bigger night out.
What to Do in Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao’s facilities centre around Boat Avenue, a 30,000 square metre outdoor shopping complex that has become the area’s lifestyle hub. It features fashion boutiques, dozens of restaurants, and the Villa Market supermarket. Every Friday from 4 to 9 pm, a night market sets up with Thai street food and local crafts. Nearby Porto de Phuket adds more shops and restaurants.
The real draw in Bang Tao is the beach club scene. Catch Beach Club set the standard for Phuket and remains the most famous, with its infinity pool, full restaurant, and parties featuring international DJs. Xana at Angsana has a 35-metre pool and transforms from a family-friendly daytime spot to a party venue at night. RAVA Beach Club opened in 2025 with three infinity pools along 150 metres of beachfront. The newer Casuarina Beach Club at Dusit Thani and Nora Beach Club have expanded the options further.
For families, the Laguna resorts offer exceptional kids’ clubs. Angsana has three playgrounds for different age groups. Blue Tree Phuket, a short drive away, features a water park with a lagoon and waterslides for all ages. The 18-hole Laguna Golf Club is a popular option for golfers.
