A Rooftop Bar & Restaurant in Phuket Town
Cue Bar is a bar and restaurant on Phang Nga Road in Phuket Old Town, known for its pool tables, live music and open-air rooftop. The name says it all. Pool is at the heart of the place, and the tables in the middle of the room are what bring most regulars back. The bar is split into two very different sections, so you can pick the mood you are in: a lively ground floor with bands playing, or a quieter rooftop with views over the old shophouses. It has become one of my regular suggestions when readers ask where to spend an evening in town.
Location
Cue Bar is on Phang Nga Road, one of the historic streets of Old Town and the same street as the famous On On Hotel. It’s close to the clock tower roundabout at the end of the road, and a short walk from Thalang Road and the Sunday Walking Street, so it’s an easy stop after exploring the old streets or having dinner nearby.
There’s a small patio out front with a few streetside tables, too (which smokers appreciate!). It’s also a good spot to sit with a cold drink and watch the life of Phang Nga Road go by, with its old shophouses, scooters and evening strollers.
Atmosphere
The ground floor is the main bar, with air conditioning, pool tables and a stage for live bands. It has a sports bar feel, with big screens showing live football and other games, and a friendly mix of locals, expats and travellers. The crowd is one of the best things about the place. You’ll often see strangers end up playing pool together.
The pool tables follow the classic winner-stays-on format, so anyone can chalk up and challenge whoever is on the table. Local pool teams play here too, so don’t be surprised if your opponent turns out to be a lot better than expected. Even if you don’t play, the games are fun to watch from the bar.
The rooftop is a different experience. It’s open-air, more local in style, with musicians playing Thai songs and views over the Sino-Portuguese rooftops of Old Town. It offers nice views at sunset, especially when you can watch the sky light up over the colourful streets below. If you want a relaxed start to the evening, go up first, then move downstairs when the bands begin.
About the Food and Drinks
Cue Bar offers a good range of beers and cocktails, plus a food menu with both Western and Thai dishes, so it works as a casual dinner spot as well as a bar. Portions are generous and the prices are reasonable, which is part of why the place attracts so many regulars.
The rooftop has its own buffet of grilled meats, cooked on an outdoor grill, which is popular with Thai groups and adds to the local feel of the upper floor. It’s a simple formula: grilled food, cold beer, live Thai music and a sunset over Old Town.
