Cocktails and grill on Bangtao Beach
Benny’s Cocktail and Grill is an understated gem hidden by the roadside in Bangtao Beach; opened in 2015 and specialising in meats but with many excellent other options, including Thai food. We heard of it for a while and even drove by a couple of times, but it took us too long to stop and try it. So we paid them a long overdue visit, and as always, came without informing or even making a booking, which was almost a mistake. Benny’s is very popular and is often fully booked. Luckily, as we arrived early, we used a table booked much later.
The restaurant is beautifully designed, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls around the dining room. The lighting is extremely well designed and successfully creates a cosy atmosphere in a vast open room. on one side of the room is a vast bar counter where guests enjoy gathering before dinner, sipping cocktails skillfully prepared by the bartender. During the happy hour, from 5.30 to 7.30, guests can enjoy two cocktails for the price of one, so we had an Aperol Spritz (290 baht) and a mocktail at 190 baht. The beers are at 120 baht.
The menu is not very long but very tempting, and obviously, steak and meat are focussed, but several fish dishes are also on the list. We started with a delicious appetiser called ‘Burnt End’, cubed smoked beef, sliced pickled jalapenos with tortilla chips (220 baht) and grilled goat chees salad (270 baht). As for the mains, we went for a Beef Tartare prepared by the chef at our table (690 baht), and a perfectly cooked Black Angus Scotch Fillet (920 baht)
As you enjoy your dinner, a musician sings and plays softly to add to that atmosphere, and to our surprise, the many elements add up perfectly for an excellent dinner to remember. Benny’s was a perfect experience with excellent and well-prepared meats and dishes.
