Discover the Beaches of Phuket!
Phuket beaches fall into a few categories. Some are busy tourist hubs with hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Others are quieter day-trip destinations with no accommodation but great sand. And then there are the remote beaches that take some effort to reach.
I’ve been exploring Phuket beaches since 1994, and I still find new spots. The island has over 40 beaches, but most visitors stick to just three or four. That’s fine if you want convenience, but you’d be missing some real gems. We’ve covered them all here, so you can pick what suits you.

Which Beach is Best for Me?
This is the question we get asked most. The honest answer? It depends on what you want. Some people need nightlife and restaurants within walking distance. Others want peace and quiet. We’ve written detailed comparisons for the most common dilemmas, like Patong vs Kata, or Kata vs Karon. Pick the one that matches your decision, and we’ll break down the differences.
Main Beaches to Book a Hotel in Phuket
These six beaches have the best hotel selection and the most to do nearby. They’re where most first-time visitors stay, and for good reason. Each has its own character, from Patong’s non-stop energy to Mai Khao’s peaceful 11 km stretch. If you’re not sure where to book, start here.
Other Beaches to Spend the Day
These beaches don’t have many hotels, but they’re worth a visit during your trip. Some are just a short drive from the main tourist areas. Surin changed a lot after the 2014 cleanup and is now more natural than before. Rawai isn’t great for swimming, but the seafood market there is one of our favourites.
Remote Beaches
These take more effort. Some require a boat ride, others a steep walk down a jungle path. They won’t suit everyone. But if you want to escape the crowds and don’t mind a bit of adventure, these beaches are the payoff. Freedom Beach is the most famous, but Banana Beach has better food and easier access now.
