Patong Beach vs Bang Tao Beach

Where to Stay in Phuket: Patong or Bang Tao?

Patong Beach and Bang Tao Beach are two of Phuket’s most popular destinations, and they couldn’t be more different. Both beaches sit on Phuket’s west coast with stunning sunset views, but the experience at each is worlds apart. Patong is Phuket’s entertainment capital with world-famous nightlife on Bangla Road, while Bang Tao offers a more sophisticated escape with luxury resorts, beach clubs, and a laid-back atmosphere.

The two beaches are about 20km apart, roughly a 25-minute drive up the coast. Many visitors to Phuket spend time at both, enjoying the party scene in Patong before retreating to Bang Tao’s tranquillity, or staying in Bang Tao while making evening trips down to Patong for the nightlife. If you’re deciding where to base yourself, understanding what each beach offers will help you make the right choice for your holiday style.

Update: Songkran Festival is on April 13 to 15 this year. If you are planning to visit Phuket in April, book early. Hotels in Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, and Bangtao fill up fast during this period, some hotels are already fully booked.

The Beaches

The Beach of Patong

Food Vendors at Loma Park in Patong Beach

Patong Beach has a 3km strip of soft golden sand along Phuket’s west coast, about 35km from Phuket International Airport. The beach is lined with rows of sun loungers for rent, massage huts, and vendors selling food and drinks. Water sports include Hobie cat sailing, paddleboarding, and boogie boards, though the parasailing and jet ski rentals are best avoided due to safety concerns and frequent scam reports.

The North of Patong Beach

The beach is busiest in the central section and can feel packed during peak season, so arrive early if you want a good spot. The north end of Patong near Kalim Beach is generally quieter and offers better water clarity. During high season from November through April, the bay is calm and pleasant for swimming. The monsoon months bring waves, with Kalim Beach becoming popular for surfing.

At the southern end of Patong, you’ll find a jetty where longtail boats offer trips to nearby Freedom Beach. The floating Yona Beach Club operates from there during the calmer months, offering a fun day of cocktails and poolside relaxation just offshore. Read More!

The Beach of Bang Tao

Bang Tao Beach Video

Bang Tao Beach stretches 6-8km along Phuket’s west coast, making it nearly twice as long as Patong. The crescent-shaped bay features light yellowish-grey sand that varies in texture, finer at the southern end near the Laguna resorts and coarser toward the north. The most striking difference from Patong is how uncrowded it feels. Even during peak high season, you can walk for 10 minutes and have a section of beach entirely to yourself.

The water is clean, though it has a slightly murky appearance from the silty bottom. Swimming conditions are excellent during high season, with gradual entry and no rocks, making it safe for children. During low tide at the northern and southern sections, you may need to walk 50 meters or more through shallow water to reach swimming depth.

Casuarina trees line much of the beach, providing natural shade until around 11 am. The sunsets at Bang Tao are spectacular, with the sun dropping directly into the Andaman Sea. From May to October, Bang Tao becomes a good surf spot, with waves ranging from half a meter to 3 meters.

RAVA Beach Club in Bang Tao Beach, Phuket

The southern section of the beach is where you’ll find the Laguna Phuket resorts and the famous beach clubs, including Catch Beach Club, Xana at Angsana, and the newer Casuarina and RAVA beach clubs. The hotels clean their beach sections multiple times daily, maintaining high standards. Read More!
