Where to Stay in Phuket: Nai Harn or Kata?
Nai Harn Beach and Kata Beach are both on the southern part of Phuket’s west coast, about 10 km apart. Both have beautiful white sand and clear blue water during the high season, and both attract visitors who prefer something quieter than Patong. But the experience of staying at each is very different. Kata is a proper beach town with restaurants, shops, and hotels within walking distance. Nai Harn is more secluded, surrounded by green hills, with no town nearby and far fewer hotels to choose from. The choice comes down to how much convenience matters to you versus how much peace and quiet you want.
| Update: Songkran Festival is on April 13 to 15 this year. If you are planning to visit Phuket in April, book early. Hotels in Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, and Bangtao fill up fast during this period, some hotels are already fully booked. |
Overview
Who is Nai Harn Beach for?

Nai Harn Beach is a good destination for travellers who want a beautiful, natural beach without the tourist-town atmosphere. The beach is tucked between green hills in the far south of Phuket, with no high-rise buildings, no town nearby, and a relaxed feel that has not changed much over the past 30 years. Nai Harn works best for couples, longer-stay visitors, and anyone happy to rent a car or motorbike to get around.
The protected beachfront means the bay has kept its original charm. A handful of casual Thai restaurants sit under tall trees just behind the sand, and the famous Promthep Cape sunset viewpoint is a short drive away. If you want peace, natural beauty, and don’t need shops and nightlife within walking distance, Nai Harn is hard to beat.

Who is Kata Beach for?

Kata Beach is an ideal place for couples, families, or groups of friends looking for a mix of beach time and convenient access to restaurants, shops, and activities. Kata has a proper town behind the beach with a popular night market, massage shops, and a large selection of dining options. Despite being one of Phuket’s busiest beaches, Kata offers a more laid-back atmosphere than Patong, making it a good choice for those who want things within walking distance without the noise.
Kata is also a great base for exploring the south of Phuket. The Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, and Karon Viewpoint are all a short drive away. The beach has good waves for surfing during the low season, and the choice of hotels across all budgets is much larger than what you will find at Nai Harn.
Pros:
- Everything within walking distance: restaurants, shops, night market.
- Large selection of hotels across all budgets, from hostels to 5-star resorts.
- Family-friendly with surfing, mini-golf at Dino Park, and flowboarding.
- Good base for exploring southern Phuket attractions.
- Easy access to nearby Kata Noi and Karon beaches.
Cons:
- The beach can get crowded during the high season (December to April).
- Club Med occupies most of the beachfront, limiting access to two entry points.
- More touristy feel than Nai Harn.
- Limited nightlife with no nightclubs or large-scale entertainment.
The Beaches
The Beach of Nai Harn

Nai Harn is a crescent-shaped bay about 700 metres long, with powdery white sand and clear water sheltered between green hills and a couple of tiny islands. The beachfront is protected by law, and nothing can be built on it. Tall casuarina trees cover the land behind the sand, and a line of casual Thai restaurants sit just across a small road, no more than a hundred metres from the beach.

During the high season (December to April), the water is calm, clear, and excellent for swimming. The bay is a popular anchorage for yachts and sailboats, and the sight of dozens of masts bobbing on the horizon adds to the scenery. In the low season, the waves pick up, and Nai Harn becomes popular with surfers and kite surfers.
At the south end of the beach, a small stream from the lake behind the beach crosses the sand. On the other side, you can walk to the rocks and explore. The lake itself, once natural, is now a large pond where you can rent paddle boats. Wat Nai Harn, a beautiful temple, sits between the beach and the lake.

Several lovely beaches and viewpoints are nearby. The small Ya Nui Beach is on the road between Nai Harn and Promthep Cape. Ao Sane, a hidden rocky beach, is just behind The Nai Harn Phuket hotel. The Windmill Viewpoint offers a stunning panorama of the bay, and Promthep Cape is only 3.5 km south, famous for its sunsets.
The Beach of Kata

Kata Beach has a 1.5 km stretch of soft golden sand with clear turquoise water and a small island (Koh Pu) sitting offshore. The beach is about half the length of Patong, but it has better waves for surfing during the low season from May to October, when board rentals and lessons are available. During the calmer months, you can rent SUP boards instead. Parasailing and jet-ski rentals are also possible on Kata Beach.

Club Med Phuket Resort occupies a large section of land along the beach, but a road separates the resort from the sand, and public access is not a problem. Beach chairs with umbrellas are available to rent, and you will find massage services under shaded platforms, plus vendors selling drinks and snacks.
At the south end of the beach, past the only two hotels with direct beach access, there is a cluster of restaurants and bars. Longtail boats are available for hire during the high season for trips along the coast. The north end of the beach has a set of small restaurants where you can eat on the sand.

The beach is especially popular in the early evening when visitors gather to photograph the sunset, with the blazing colours of the sky reflected in the water and Koh Pu Island on the horizon. Just south of Kata, around the headland, is Kata Noi Beach, a smaller and quieter bay with beautiful sand and excellent hotels right on the beach.
The Hotels
The Hotels in Nai Harn Beach

Nai Harn has fewer accommodation options than most other popular Phuket beaches, but the hotels here tend to be well-regarded. The Nai Harn is the standout property, a 5-star resort built on the hillside with panoramic views of the bay and direct access to the beach. Originally a Mandarin Oriental, then a Le Royal Meridien, the hotel has always been iconic for its location.

Other options include the Wyndham Grand Nai Harn Beach (about 850 m from the beach), Sunsuri Phuket (500 m from the beach with lake views and a shuttle service), and Gallery Hotel (a modern boutique property about 790 m from the beach). For budget travellers, Nai Harn Beach Resort is a 3-star hotel by the lake, about 1 km from the sand.
Because the area has no town, most hotels provide shuttle services to the beach. Having your own transport makes a big difference here. The limited number of hotels also means that popular properties book out quickly during the high season.

The Hotels in Kata Beach

Kata Beach has a much larger selection of hotels than Nai Harn, with options across all budgets. The Boathouse Hotel and Beyond Resort Kata are the only two resorts with direct beach access, while the sprawling Club Med Phuket sits just across the road from the sand.

Some of the most luxurious hotels and private villas in Phuket are located in Kata, especially on the headland at the southern end and at nearby Kata Noi Beach. Five-star options include The Shore at Katathani Resort, Kata Rocks, and Mom Tri’s Villa Royale. For those on a budget, there are several mid-range hotels and guesthouses available within walking distance of the beach. Just a 5-minute drive from Kata is Karon Beach, where visitors can find even more hotel options.

Things to Do and Activities
What to Do in Nai Harn?

Nai Harn is quieter than Kata when it comes to activities, but there is plenty to do if you are willing to explore. The beach itself is great for swimming and sunbathing during the high season, and beach massages are available under the trees. In the low season, the waves attract surfers and kite surfers.

The real appeal of Nai Harn is what surrounds it. Promthep Cape, 3.5 km south, is one of the most photographed spots in Phuket and famous for its sunsets. The Windmill Viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the bay. Ya Nui Beach, just down the road, is a small and charming cove. Ao Sane is a hidden rocky beach great for snorkelling. The Black Rock Viewpoint requires a steep climb but rewards you with a stunning view over the entire bay.
Rawai Beach, about 4 km away, is not a swimming beach but is the place to go for fresh seafood. You can also hire longtail boats from Rawai to reach nearby islands like Koh Bon and Coral Island. Dining options around Nai Harn include RockSalt at The Nai Harn hotel, M&M’s Pizzeria (a local favourite for nearly two decades), and a number of Thai and Western restaurants scattered along the roads.
What to Do in Kata Beach?

Kata has more to do within walking distance than Nai Harn. The streets behind the beach are packed with restaurants, shops, massage places, and a popular night market that draws crowds every weekend. The town is compact enough to walk around comfortably, and you will not run out of places to eat or things to browse.

Family-friendly activities include Super Surf Kata (a flowboarding venue), Dino Park mini-golf, and a small playground next to Club Med. Surfing is popular during the low season, with board rentals and lessons available on the beach. Karon Viewpoint, one of the best lookout points in Phuket, is just a short drive up the hill.
For sunset dining with views, head to the restaurants in the hills around Kata, like After Beach Bar or A Blanket & A Pillow. When it comes to nightlife, Kata is much quieter than Patong. There are a few bars with live music and some beer bars, but no nightclubs.
Nai Harn or Kata: Which One Should You Pick?
Choose Nai Harn if you want a beautiful, natural beach without the tourist-town feel. Nai Harn suits travellers who are happy to rent transport, don’t need shops and restaurants within walking distance, and prefer a quiet stay with fewer crowds. Couples and longer-stay visitors tend to prefer Nai Harn.
Choose Kata if you want a beautiful beach with the convenience of a town around it. Kata suits families, first-time visitors, and anyone who wants restaurants, shopping, and activities without needing their own transport. The larger selection of hotels means more options for every budget.
