About Songkran Festival
Songkran is Thailand’s traditional New Year festival, celebrated every year from 13 to 15 April. In Phuket, the celebrations are lively and spread across several parts of the island. The main event is the water fight. Streets fill with people armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses, and nobody stays dry.
The biggest Songkran action in Phuket takes place along Bangla Road in Patong, where the street becomes a massive open-air water fight from morning until late. Phuket Town also has its own celebrations, with a more traditional atmosphere, parades, and local ceremonies alongside the water throwing.
Beyond the water fights, Songkran is a time when Thai families visit temples, pay respect to elders, and clean their homes. If you visit Wat Chalong or other temples during the festival, you will see locals pouring water over Buddha statues as a sign of respect and purification.
Songkran in Phuket is one of the most fun experiences on the island. Expect to get completely soaked. Keep your phone and valuables in a waterproof bag, and wear clothes you do not mind getting wet.
