A Hidden Bamboo Bar on Bangtao Beach

Smigo’s Bar and Restaurant is a small bamboo beach bar on the sand at the very north end of Bangtao Beach, just before the headland that marks the start of Layan. The venue opened in 2022 and combines a thatched bar, low tables under coloured umbrellas, and a long line of beanbags facing the sea.

Smigo’s serves Thai and Western food, cocktails, and cold beer from 11 am to 11 pm daily, with a fire show after sunset on most nights. I just went for a drink, and it turned out to be one of the nicest surprises I have had on this stretch of coast in a long time.

Where Exactly Is Smigo’s?

Smigo’s is on the northern tip of Bangtao Beach, right before the small headland that separates Bangtao from Layan. The entrance is a short sandy path off the main road, marked by a hand-painted wooden sign and a bamboo fence. Many people online list it under Layan, but officially, it is Bangtao. The confusion makes sense once you stand on the sand. This end of the bay is so far from the busy southern stretch that it feels like a different beach altogether.

The closest hotel is Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach, directly behind the bar. From Laguna, it is a 10-minute drive, and there is easy parking on the sandy lane outside the entrance.

Layan Beach in Phuket

For context, Bangtao was the last big west coast bay to be developed, and this northern end stayed empty much longer than the south. Layan, just over the headland, used to have a cluster of small wooden bars by the river mouth, but those were cleared out a few years ago. Smigo’s is now the closest thing left to that old beach bar feel.

Why It Feels Like a Hidden Gem

Layan Beach used to be one of the most charming corners of Phuket, with a handful of small wooden beach bars at its southern end, right where the river meets the sea. Those bars were the soul of Layan. They were removed a few years ago, and the beach has been silent ever since. Beautiful, but silent.

Smigo’s fills part of that gap. It is technically still on Bangtao, but it is on the boundary, and walking south from Layan you reach it in five minutes along the sand. For people staying around Layan or northern Bangtao, this is now the only proper beach bar within easy walking distance. Most visitors driving up from Laguna do not know it exists, which is why the place still feels personal even on a busy weekend.

The Setting and the Beach

The whole bar is on sand. There is no deck, no tiles, no concrete. Tables and chairs are under casuarina trees and pandanus, with strings of festoon lights running between the trunks. The umbrellas are the old-style Thai ones with scalloped edges, in green, white, and blue.

Closer to the water, there are around 20 large beanbags lined up facing the sea, with low wooden tables between them. This is where most people end up in the late afternoon, drink in hand, watching the surf roll in.

The beach itself is wide and almost empty, even in high season. The sand is soft and pale. The water on this stretch turns a strong turquoise on calm days. From May to October, the swell can be heavy, and the red flags go up, so check before swimming.

The Food and Drinks

The menu is short and practical. Thai classics like green curry, pad thai, tom yum, and crab fried rice. Grilled seafood, including prawns, squid, and whole fish. A few Western options like burgers, pasta, and salads. This is beach food in a beach bar, exactly what the setting calls for.

The bar runs a full list of cocktails, fresh fruit shakes, fresh coconuts straight from the shell, wine by the glass, and cold local beer. There is a daily happy hour in the late afternoon with discounts on selected drinks and a chalkboard listing the specials of the day.

Sunset, Music, and Fire Show

This part of Bangtao faces straight west, so the sunset is unobstructed. People start arriving from around 5 pm to grab a beanbag. By 6 pm, the beanbags are usually all taken.

A DJ plays most evenings from around sunset, mostly chilled house and reggae, kept at a reasonable volume. After dark, on most nights, there is a short fire show on the sand near the water. It lasts about 15 minutes.

The bar stays open until 11 pm, but most of the action winds down by 10 pm. This is not a party beach club. It is a place to eat, drink, and watch the sun drop.
