How is the Weather in Phuket in January?
Phuket weather in January is usually as perfect as it gets. The sky is spotless, the sea is crystal clear and calm, and the temperature is perfect, cooler than in other months. This is how everyone imagines a tropical island like Phuket should look. Of course, the best month of the year means prices will be high (especially for hotels), there will be traffic on the roads and many people on the beach. Read more about Phuket weather.

If you want to avoid crowds, consider the northern beaches during high and peak seasons. Beaches in the north are superb and still relatively quiet compared to the busier beaches in the south. Unless you come specifically for the party scene, you will find plenty of great hotels, restaurants and shops for a fun and comfortable holiday.

Rain Chart for Phuket in January

Sea Condition in January
The sea is calm, with clear waters and minimal waves. Ideal for swimming, snorkelling and island hopping. Low risk of strong currents. All beaches are safe for swimming, and visibility for diving and snorkelling is at its best.
Things to Do in January
January is the perfect month to explore the islands and Phuket’s many beaches. The sea is clear and blue, and so is the sky. Remember that January is peak season in Phuket: tours are busy, and hotels are at their highest rates. If you’re a photographer or want great Instagram photos, this is an ideal time because it’s not as hot as March and April, and the light is beautiful.
Visit the Similan Islands

January is a great time to visit the Similan Islands as the sea is calm and photos look fantastic with blue skies. Since the Similans are closed from mid-May to mid-October, January offers perfect conditions. All the islands around Phuket are beautiful at this time of year.
Explore the Beaches
All of Phuket’s beaches are at their best in January. The sea is calm, the sand is clean, and the sky is blue. Popular beaches like Patong, Kata and Karon are busy but well-serviced. For quieter options, head to Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon or Banana Beach in the north.
Events and Festivals
Thailand Biennale Phuket 2025-2026
Thailand Biennale Phuket 2025 is a national contemporary art biennial set across Phuket, featuring Thai and international artists under the theme “Eternal [Kalpa],” which explores long-timescale relations between humans and nature. The edition runs from November 2025 to April 2026, with exhibitions across multiple districts and outdoor/indoor venues on the island.
Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year sometimes falls in late January (dates vary based on the lunar calendar). If it does, Old Phuket Town comes alive with decorations, dragon dances and celebrations. The Chinese heritage of Phuket makes this a significant local festival.

What to Pack for January
Pack light, breathable clothing. T-shirts, shorts, skirts and sandals are all you need. The temperature is comfortable, and rain is very unlikely. A light cardigan can be useful for air-conditioned restaurants or cooler evenings. High-SPF sunscreen is essential as the UV remains extreme. Read more in my full packing guide for Phuket.
Insider Tips
January is peak season with peak prices. Hotel rates are at their highest, especially in the first two weeks when visitors extend their Christmas/New Year holidays. Book accommodation well in advance.
Traffic can be heavy, particularly around Patong and the southern beaches. The road between Patong and Kata/Karon gets congested in the evenings. Allow extra time for transfers.
Popular tours fill up quickly. Book Similan Islands trips, Phi Phi tours and Phang Nga Bay excursions a few days ahead. Walk-up availability is limited.
The northern beaches offer the same perfect weather with fewer crowds. Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Bang Tao have excellent hotels and restaurants without the Patong congestion.
January is the driest month of the year. Rain is rare, but a brief shower is always possible. Don’t let it worry you. It passes quickly.
The best way to check real conditions is my daily weather timelapses. Each video shows a full day compressed into one minute. Nothing helps more than seeing what a typical January day actually looked like last year.
January Weather Through the Years
January is the month that made Phuket famous as a winter escape. Blue skies, calm seas, comfortable temperatures. The tropical paradise that appears on postcards.
Most Januarys deliver exactly what people expect. Consistently sunny days, perfect beach conditions, ideal weather for island hopping. It’s the most reliable month of the year.
The temperature feels different from the hot season. Days are warm but not oppressive. Nights can feel almost cool by tropical standards. Locals joke about “cold season” when the temperature drops below 25°C, though visitors from cold countries find it amusing.
The trade-off for perfect weather is crowds and prices. January is when Phuket is busiest. The beaches that feel empty in September are packed with sun loungers. Traffic that flows freely in low season crawls in the evenings. Hotels charge premium rates.
For photography, January is exceptional. The light is clear, the sky is blue, and the sea is calm. Golden hour creates stunning conditions. If capturing Phuket at its most beautiful matters to you, January delivers.
