Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is one of the original 5-star hotels in the Laguna complex on Bang Tao Beach. It’s been around since 1987 and went through a major renovation a few years back. The Thai design feels more traditional than the modern minimalist resorts nearby. Most rooms are built along the beachfront, so you’re only a few steps from the sand. The Laguna area is quiet, which suits people who want to stay on the property rather than explore Patong or Phuket Town every night.

Overview

The Dusit Thani has been part of the Laguna complex since 1987, which makes it one of the older 5-stars in this part of Phuket. It went through a renovation a few years back, but they kept the traditional Thai design rather than going minimal and modern like many newer resorts. The high ceilings, wood details, and orchids in the lobby feel different from the concrete-and-glass look you get elsewhere.

Check-in is quick. The staff are the old-school Thai hospitality type, soft-spoken and attentive without hovering. The main building runs parallel to the beach, so most rooms face the water. Ground floor units open directly onto the lawn, upper floors get the wider views. It’s a simple layout that works well. The hotel’s main building is built along the beachfront, offering ocean views or even beach access to most rooms.

The Beach of Bang Tao

The beach in front of the hotel is wide, with beautiful white sand. The sea is clear and blue during the high season (December to May). There are plenty of beach massages and small local restaurants on the beach.

The rooms

We stayed in a beachfront room on the ground floor, which was superb. The terrace with two loungers was perfect for relaxing with the sea breeze and enjoying the sea view across the manicured lawn.

The room is spacious and well-decorated, with a great sitting area facing the beach through a floor-to-ceiling glass window. The bed is large and dangerously comfortable. The bathroom is well-equipped and provides all the expected amenities from a 5-star hotel. The bathtub is large, and it is a welcome place to relax at the end of an exploration day. There are plenty of plugs to charge all your devices, and the espresso machine was a nice treat!

Restaurants and bars

There are five restaurants and bars at Dusit Laguna Phuket: La Trattoria, Laguna Cafe, Ruen Thai, Casuarina Beach Restaurant and the Horizon Lounge.

La Trattoria

La Trattoria is probably the best-known restaurant in the hotel, and outside guests frequently come for dinner. The restaurant is spacious, white and beautiful. Laguna Cafe

Laguna Cafe is where you will enjoy your morning buffet breakfast or Thai and international cuisine for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is open all day, from 7.30 to 10.30 pm.

Facilities

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket features an excellent Spa, perfect for helping recover from jet lag or sunburn. Keep in mind that the spa is the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind on a rainy day, so call them as soon as possible if the weather is not great to secure a therapist!

What’s Great For Kids

Busy Bee Kids Club takes children aged 4 and up from 9 am daily. The club building has floor-to-ceiling windows, air conditioning, and is filled with toys, games, puzzles, and books. There’s a separate games room with PlayStation and an outdoor grassed area for activities. Staff mix scheduled activities with free play time.

The Children’s Camp Out Experience is genuinely different. Kids sleep in tents, play games, do face painting and arts and crafts, then roast marshmallows in the evening. Surf camps and junior chef experiences are also available.

The property has a main pool with a jacuzzi plus a kids’ pool. The Two-Bedroom Pool Villa is exceptional for families. These are three-storey residences covering 252 sqm. The ground floor has two bedrooms opening to the gardens. The middle level has living, dining, and kitchen areas opening onto a terrace.

The rooftop has an 18 sqm private pool surrounded by loungers. Available in lake or beach settings. Standard rooms are 32-35 sqm with lagoon or ocean views. Dusit Club rooms on the ground floor have private gardens. Direct beachfront access. Five restaurants plus two bars, including beachside dining at Casuarina.

Good for: Families wanting a Thai heritage atmosphere with unique experiences like camping and cooking classes, or those wanting exceptional pool villas.

Summary

The Dusit Thani works for travellers who want a proper beach resort without the noise of Patong. Bang Tao is one of the quieter west coast beaches, and staying inside the Laguna complex means you’re a bit removed from independent restaurants and local life. Boat Avenue is about 10 minutes by car if you want to eat outside the hotel.

The building shows its age in a few spots compared to newer neighbours like Angsana, but the bones are solid, and the renovation helped. La Trattoria still pulls outside guests for dinner, which says something. One complaint: the single pool feels undersized during high season when the hotel is full. If a big pool matters to you, check SAii or Angsana instead.

The ground floor beachfront rooms are worth requesting. You walk straight onto the lawn and down to the sand. Upper floors are quiete,r but you lose that direct access.
