Phuket Beaches

Phuket has more than 30 beaches spread along its west coast and around the southern tip of the island. Each beach has its own character, from the busy tourist strip of Patong to the quiet, hard-to-reach coves like Banana Beach and Freedom Beach.

The most popular beaches sit on the west coast, facing the Andaman Sea. KataKaron, and Kamala offer a good balance between scenery and convenience. Further north, Bang Tao and Mai Khao are longer and quieter, with more space to spread out. In the south, Nai Harn and Ya Nui are favourites for their clear water and scenic settings.

The best swimming conditions are from November to April, when the sea is calm and clear. During the monsoon season, some beaches have strong currents and waves, and red flags mark the areas where swimming is unsafe.

Choosing the right beach depends on what you are looking for. For a complete comparison, see Best Beaches in Phuket.

I arrived in Phuket in 1994 and have never left. After travelling through 40+ countries and working with Club Med and Expedia, where I created the Hotels.com Go Guides international travel guide with my team, I launched Phuket 101 in 2011 to share what I've explored, discovered and learned. Everything here comes from personal experience, with my own photography and videos from across Thailand.View Author posts
