A Modest but Relaxed Affordable Rooftop Bar
Alfresco Sky is a modest rooftop bar on the eighth floor of Patong Resort Hotel, in the middle of Patong, with a clear view over Patong Bay, facing the sunset. The bar opens at 5 pm and runs until midnight, with a happy hour in the early evening. It is casual, spacious and quiet, which is rare for this part of the beach. I came here with friends who live nearby, and it turned out to be a nice surprise.
A quiet escape with a view
Most rooftop bars in Patong are loud and packed. This one is the opposite. The space is large and modest, with simple wooden furniture, orange cushions, fairy lights and a green floor. You can sink into a sofa or take a small table by the edge and look out over the town and the sea below. There is no thumping music and no crowd fighting for space. If you are somewhere along the middle of the beach road and want a calm spot with a view, this is a good place to know.
The sunset
The bar faces west, so it catches the sunset over Patong Bay. The sky turns pink and orange behind the high-rise buildings, and the lights of the town switch on as it gets dark. Early evening is the best time to arrive, around 6 pm, so you can watch the colours change while you have your first drink.
Drinks and happy hour
Prices here are very reasonable, well below the beach clubs nearby, and that is a big part of the appeal. The happy hour is the main reason to come. Everything on the happy hour list is just ฿100, whether you order a beer, a cocktail, a spirit or a mocktail. That covers local beers like Chang, Leo and Singha, classic cocktails such as a Mai Tai, Mojito or Pina Colada, and spirits like Bacardi, Smirnoff and Gordon’s gin. Happy hour runs from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm, which lines up nicely with the sunset.
Food
They also serve food, and I stayed for dinner. It was fine, but not the highlight. The kitchen does steaks and grilled dishes with mash and vegetables, and it does the job if you are hungry. For me, though, the drinks and the view are the reason to come, not a full meal.
Why I would go back
The appeal is simple. It is quiet, the view is good, and you can sit for an hour or two without spending much. That makes it an easy place to meet friends at the end of the day, away from the noise of the main strip.
