Map of Mai Khao Beach
This map of Mai Khao Beach shows the main landmarks, hotels and points of interest along the longest beach in Phuket. Mai Khao stretches for about 11 kilometres along the northwest coast, and unlike the busier beaches further south, most of it is undeveloped. The beach is part of Sirinat National Park, which is why it has stayed quiet. There are no rows of sun loungers or beach bars here, just a long, wide stretch of sand backed by casuarina trees.
Because Mai Khao is so long, it helps to understand which section is which before you visit. The map below covers four areas running from south to north.
South Mai Khao (Near the Airport)
The southern end of Mai Khao is the closest beach to Phuket Airport. Planes fly directly overhead on approach, which has made this spot famous for plane-spotting photos. The beach here is wide and mostly empty. There are very few facilities at this end, so bring your own water and shade. The sea can have strong currents during the monsoon season, and swimming is not always safe between May and October.
Central Mai Khao (Resort Area)
The central section is where Mai Khao’s luxury resorts are clustered. The JW Marriott, SALA Phuket, Renaissance and Anantara all sit along this stretch, each with its own beachfront. Even if you are not staying at one of these resorts, you can walk along the beach freely. A handful of small restaurants and beach shacks operate seasonally near the resorts, mostly during high season.
Sirinat National Park Area
The area around the national park entrance is the most accessible part of Mai Khao for day visitors. There is a car park, basic facilities and a few food stalls. The beach here is clean and quiet, with a long line of casuarina pines providing natural shade. This is also the stretch where sea turtles come to nest between November and February. The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation works in this area, and during nesting season, there are occasionally organised releases.
North Mai Khao
The far northern end of Mai Khao is the most remote beach in Phuket. The road access is limited, and on most days you can walk for a long time without seeing another person. The Sarasin Bridge connecting Phuket to the mainland is visible from the northern tip. This section suits people who want a genuinely empty beach, but there are no shops, restaurants or facilities at all. Bring everything you need.
Getting Around Mai Khao
Mai Khao is not a walking beach in the way that Kata or Kamala are. The resort area alone stretches over several kilometres, and the beach runs for 11 kilometres in total. You will need a car or scooter to move between areas. There is no public transport along the beach road. The nearest shops and restaurants outside the resorts are on the main highway (Route 4026), a short drive inland.
