Chuan Heang Dim Sum Restaurant

Phuket’s 100-Year Dim Sum Breakfast

Chuan Heang Dim Sum is a breakfast restaurant in Phuket Town that has been open for over 100 years. Fourth generation now. It’s one of the few places on the island where locals still outnumber tourists at 7 am.

How It Works

The system here is self-service. Find a table first, then walk to the front where the steaming stations are. Point at what you want, and the staff will help carry the tray. At the end, they count the empty plates and calculate the bill. Most dishes run 30-50 Baht each. A typical breakfast for two costs around 200-300 Baht.

The setup is basic: steel tables, fluorescent lights, steam everywhere. Loud and crowded by 8 am. Not a place for a quiet breakfast. Parking on the street gets difficult after 7:30 am, especially on weekends.

What to Order

The har gow (shrimp dumplings) are what most people come for. Soft wrapper, whole shrimp inside. The siu mai comes in pork or crab versions. Rice noodle rolls with shrimp are good here, too.

Less common items worth trying: the pork rib soup (Bak Kut Teh) with Chinese herbs, and mee sua, a Phuket-style noodle soup that’s hard to find elsewhere. Crab fried rolls are a local thing, not standard dim sum.

One thing different from Hong Kong-style dim sum: the dipping sauce. It’s a sweet-spicy red sauce specific to Phuket. Takes some getting used to if you’re expecting soy and chilli oil.

Free chrysanthemum tea is on every table.

Must-try items at Chuan Heang Branch 1 include:

  • Har gow (shrimp dumplings) – particularly praised for their soft, chewy wrapper and fresh shrimp filling
  • Siu mai (pork dumplings) – both pork and crab varieties
  • Steamed fish with soy sauce
  • Pork rib soup (Bak Kut Teh) with Chinese herbs
  • Rice noodle rolls with shrimp – featuring whole shrimp in each piece
  • Crab fried rolls – a local speciality
  • Mee sua – a Phuket-style noodle soup with pork ribs
