Aikwanich Mansion on Dibuk Road

An Iconic Green Mansion on Dibuk Road

You canโ€™t miss Aikwanich Mansion, this mint-green building when you walk through the heart of Phuket Old Town โ€” it sits right at the corner where Dibuk Road meets Yaowarat Road, just opposite the Locktien Local Food Court, a beautiful example of the islandโ€™s old Sino-Portuguese architecture. Iโ€™ve passed it countless times over the years, and even though itโ€™s not open to the public, itโ€™s still one of the most photographed corners in town.

Itโ€™s hard to say exactly when Aikwanich Mansion was built, but judging by the style and location, it probably dates back to the early 20th century โ€” maybe around the 1920s or 30s, when Phuket was booming from the tin mining industry. Like many other mansions in the area, this one was likely owned by a wealthy Chinese merchant family, blending European-style arches and balconies with traditional Chinese design elements.

What makes this building stand out is its pastel green faรงade trimmed in white, the sweeping arches on both floors, and those tall wooden shutters. Itโ€™s perfectly symmetrical and very well maintained. No one seems to know what itโ€™s used for these days. Some say itโ€™s owned privately. Others say itโ€™s just sitting quietly, like a beautiful old shell, watching the town change around it.

Even if youโ€™re not into architecture, itโ€™s hard not to stop and take a photo or a selfie. The building is especially striking in the late afternoon light, when the shadows stretch across the street and the colours seem to glow. It sits right in the middle of whatโ€™s become a lively part of town โ€” thereโ€™s a popular local food court, some cool little shophouses around, and itโ€™s not far from the old On On Hotel or Thalang Road.

We usually pass it when weโ€™re walking the Old Town loop. Itโ€™s not a destination on its own, but it feels like one of those landmarks that hold the memory of the street โ€” a visual anchor in a neighbourhood thatโ€™s constantly evolving. It may be silent, but itโ€™s not forgotten.
