About Wat Chalong
Wat Chalong is the most important Buddhist temple in Phuket. The temple complex sits in the Chalong area in the south of the island, set back from the main road behind a large car park. It is the most visited temple on the island, drawing both tourists and local worshippers throughout the day.
The main building is the Grand Pagoda, a tall structure decorated with murals depicting the life of Buddha. Inside, the walls are covered in detailed paintings, and the upper floors offer views over the surrounding countryside. The older prayer halls in the compound contain statues of revered monks, including Luang Pho Chaem, who helped locals during a rebellion in the 19th century.
The temple grounds are well-maintained, with paved paths, small gardens, and a few souvenir stalls near the entrance. Visitors should dress modestly, covering their shoulders and knees. Entry is free.
Wat Chalong is easy to combine with a visit to the Big Buddha, which is just a short drive up the hill. For the full guide, see Wat Chalong.
