A Buddhist monastery in Phuket

Samnaksong Samakkhi Sam Kong Pai is a Buddhist monastery and temple located in Phuket. We found it’s more commonly known by several other names, including Wat Samakkhi Sam Kong, Wat Sam Kong, and Samakkhi Sam Kong Monastery.

The monastery sits in the Kathu district of Phuket, specifically in Tambon Kathu, Amphoe Kathu, Phuket Province. Some sources also indicate it’s located on Chalermprakiat Road near the Sam Kong intersection (close to Tesco Lotus), in the Vichit sub-district of Mueang Phuket.

This Buddhist temple serves as a peaceful monastery away from the typical tourist crowds. Unlike the more famous temples in Phuket, Samnaksong Samakkhi Sam Kong Pai offers visitors a quieter, more contemplative experience.

The monastery grounds are covered with large shade trees, creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the hot, dusty roads outside. The main ordination hall (ubosot) is a large two-story building, and the overall environment provides that characteristic temple calm despite being located near busy roads.

Important Note About Similar Names

We should mention there’s another religious site with a similar name: the Sam Pai Kong Shrine (also called Bangku Shrine) in Koh Kaew. This is a Chinese Taoist shrine over 100 years old, quite different from the Buddhist monastery we’re discussing. Don’t confuse the two; one is a Buddhist temple, the other is a Chinese shrine that participates in Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival.

Like most local temples in Phuket, visitors can expect a quiet, contemplative environment where monks go about their daily routines of sweeping and maintaining the grounds. The temple serves the local community rather than catering to tourists, making it an authentic place to experience Thai Buddhist culture.

The monastery represents the spiritual side of Phuket that exists alongside the island’s beaches and nightlife – a reminder that there’s always a quiet refuge nearby, even in busy areas.
