A great pizzeria in the old Phuket Town
Da Moreno @ Town is an excellent Italian restaurant and Pizzeria located on Yaowarat Road in the heart of old Phuket Town. Da Moreno @ Town is the fourth and latest branch of the very popular Da Moreno family of restaurants. The original one was in Patong, the second in Kathu and the third one in Koh Kaew. We already reviewed and enjoyed Da Moreno Kathu, so we were somehow expecting a similar experience, but this new one was even better and full of good surprises.
The location is great and a perfect spot to end your exploration of the old town, just a few meters from the now-famous Thalang Road where the Sunday Walking Street Market is. The restaurant is in one of those typical Sino-Portuguese shophouses, recently renovated and painted with easy to spot red and white colours. Inside, the decor is bright and white also with touches of red, simple and refreshing. Behind is a partly opened kitchen where the chef skillfully bakes a vast choice of pizza in a wood fire oven.
The Food
As expected, the menu consists mostly of pizza, and the list to choose from is much longer than in any other pizzeria we visited before. The fun part is that the one we loved the most is not even on the menu; you have to ask for it. It’s called Zappa Pizza and is a different way to cook it. It’s a rectangular pizza baked on cast iron. The crust is thin and crispy, the ingredients feel more deeply cooked, and once you try it, you will never look at a pizza the same way. It is our new favourite and because it is slightly smaller, which fits us perfectly as we usually can’t finish an entire pizza and we prefer thin and crispy crust. In addition, it is even cheaper! For instance, a Margarita cooked as Zappa costs 160 baht instead of 200.
Pizzas start at 200 baht (Margherita) and we counted no less than 57 different variations! There would be no point listing them all, but we tried the Pizza Napoletana (280 baht) and the Pizza al Prosciutto Cotto (230 baht). The Calamari Fritti was deliciously well cooked, and the Saute di Vongole (stir-fried clams cooked with white wine, garlic, herbs, cherry tomatoes and basil) was another excellent surprise, and you should try it.
As for dessert, we enjoyed a deliciously light homemade Tiramisu (120 baht) and Banoffee (120 baht). The soft drinks are 40 baht, beers start at 80 baht and a glass of red or white wine 150 baht.
Da Moreno @ Town was a great experience, and we definitely will go back soon. Note that the restaurant is closed on Monday and if you plan to visit on Sunday, keep in mind that parking nearby is almost impossible because of this famous Sunday market and the restaurant gets really busy.
