Sugar and Spice Cooking Class
Contents
Khun Ohn offers free Thai cooking classes each Saturday morning at 11:30 am at her restaurant Sugar and Spice on Kata Beach. To boost customers’ return after Covid, she started these free classes with the slogan, “You buy the meal, we show you how it’s made.” In other words, you pay for what you make and eat, but the lesson is free. Dishes are priced between 80 and 150 baht.
Normally she will have two dishes per class. Once done with the first dish, everyone takes a little break to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Then she starts over again with the second dish, and it’s done in the same way. She gives you background on the particular dish, how it was named, where it originated, and what both the Thai and English names are on each post.
Some of the dishes she likes to teach:
- Thai Spring Rolls, (pa piya tod, เปาะเปียะทอด),
- Chicken Cashew Nuts (Gai pad med mamuang, ไก่ผัดเม็ดมะม่วง),
- Kung Sarong (กุ้งสร่ง)
- Thai Green Curry (gaeng keow wan, แกงเขียวหวาน),
- Paneng Curry (gaeng paneng, แกงพะแนง),
- Green Papaya Salad (som tam, ส้มตำไทย),
- Tom Yam Soup (ต้มยำ),
- Pad Thai (ผัดไทย),
- Khao Soi (ข้าวซอย),
- Mango Sticky Rice (Khao niaow mamuang, ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง), is a wonderful seasonal Thai dessert.
She gives you background on the particular dish, how it was named, where it originated, and what both the Thai and English names are on each post. The list goes on. Khun Ohn is happy to take requests; if you want to learn something particular, send her a message a few days in advance.
Normally the classes begin at 11:30, and she’s usually done by 1 pm or so. But there is no hurry; some regulars stay the whole afternoon and eat and talk. It’s a fun way to meet new people and try new things. Please check Sugar and Spice’s Facebook page to see when the next scheduled class is.
Sugar and Spice Restaurant has been open for 13 years and serves mostly Thai food but since it’s in a tourist area, namely Kata Beach, Sugar and Spice also has international favourites and children’s dishes who may not enjoy Thai food as much as their parents do.
