Klong Thom Market

What to Do at Klong Thom Market

Klong Thom Market is one of the oldest and most chaotic markets in Bangkok’s Chinatown, tucked into the streets south of Yaowarat Road near Worachak Road. It is still sometimes called the Flashlight Market because it used to be so dark that buyers needed a torch to inspect what they were purchasing. Today it is better lit, but the nickname stuck.

What You Will Find

Klong Thom is known for second-hand goods and surplus stock at bargain prices. The range is enormous: old tools, electronic parts, phone accessories, vintage watches, used camera gear, kitchen equipment, bolts of fabric, and all manner of items that defy easy categorisation. It is the kind of market where you go without a plan and come away with something unexpected. Serious bargain hunters dig through piles of loose items spread on tarps at ground level, while more organised stalls line the surrounding shophouses. Food stalls operate throughout, serving Chinatown staples like roast duck on rice, guay jab rolled noodle soup, and Chinese-style pastries.

Good to Know

Trading has been part of Chinatown’s fabric for generations, and Klong Thom is one of several markets in the area alongside Sampeng Lane and the Klong Ong Ang Canal Walking Street. The market runs on Saturday evenings with the widest selection, though some shops in the surrounding blocks trade daily. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground can be uneven, and bring cash in small denominations as vendors prefer it. The nearest MRT station is Sam Yot on the Blue Line, a short walk south through the Chinatown streets.
