A Tiny Cove on Phuket’s West Coast
Siam Beach is one of the smallest and least visited beaches in Phuket. It sits on the west coast, tucked between rocky cliffs in the hilly stretch between Kata Noi and Nai Harn Beach. The cove is only about 20 metres wide. The shore is mostly rocks with small patches of sand, so it is not a place for sunbathing or building sandcastles. What it does offer is clear water and good snorkelling when the sea is calm during the high season (November to April).
How to Get There
Getting to Siam Beach takes some effort. You reach it by walking down a steep set of stairs from the road above. There is no proper signpost, and most people drive past without knowing the beach exists. The climb back up is tiring, especially in the heat. It is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues or young children. Wear good shoes and bring water.
What to Expect
There is not much here, and that is the point. The rocky entry into the water means you should bring water shoes. Once in, the snorkelling can be rewarding. The rocks and coral attract fish, and because so few people come here, the marine life is less disturbed than at more popular spots like Ao Sane or Ya Nui. There used to be a small restaurant above the beach, surrounded by trees, serving basic Thai food. Simple bungalows were also available for a very low price. Whether either is still operating is unclear, so do not count on it. Bring your own drinks, snacks, and sun protection. There is no shade on the beach itself.
After 30 years in Phuket, I had to check Siam Beach for myself. With 47 or 48 beaches on the island, I could not leave one unexplored. It was a bit of a disappointment as a beach, but I can see why snorkellers like it. If you are the kind of traveller who wants to say you have seen every beach in Phuket, Siam Beach is on the list. Otherwise, nearby Nui Beach or Ya Nui offer a better experience with easier access.
