Phuket Heroines Monument Festival

A Tribute to Thalang’s Historic Sisters

The Heroines Monument Festival occurs annually from March 13-15 at Victory Field in Thalang district, commemorating the 1785 defence of Phuket against Burmese invaders. Two sisters, Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, originally known as Chan and Mook, led the island’s resistance when no formal military leadership existed. They ingeniously disguised 500 women as soldiers and used tactical deception, including fake reinforcement marches and smouldering coconut husks to simulate musket fire.

The festival’s centrepiece features a spectacular light and sound historical drama performance running nightly from 8 pm, showcasing over 300 local performers who recreate the month-long siege. Victory Field transforms into an 18th-century battlefield with elaborate staging, sound effects, and lighting that have continued since 1980. This community-driven production includes amateur actors from diverse backgrounds, from students to government officials.

Cultural activities extend beyond the performances, beginning with Buddhist ceremonies, including group ordinations at Wat Thep Wanaram on March 8. Traditional kalamae candy-making demonstrations occur March 10-11, while wreath-laying ceremonies honour the heroines at both the Heroines Monument and Victory Field on March 13. Flag-raising ceremonies at 9 am mark the official opening.

Hundreds of stalls offer authentic Phuket cuisine, handicrafts, and local products throughout the festival grounds. Cultural performances include shadow puppetry, Nora dances, and traditional folk games, providing educational entertainment while celebrating southern Thai heritage. The festival remains free to attend and draws both locals and tourists seeking authentic cultural experiences.
