A Local Legend in Old Phuket Town

Roti Thaew Nam is one of those rare places in Phuket Town that never seems to change, no matter how much the world around it evolves. Set right at the entrance of the Sunday Walking Street Market on Thalang Road, this tiny shop has been around for more than 70 years.

There are only a few tables, and theyโ€™re almost always full. Locals and visitors come early to grab a seat, especially since the restaurant started getting listed in the Michelin Guide every year since 2019. That Michelin mention brought even more attention, but it hasnโ€™t changed the way the shop runs. Itโ€™s still a small, no-frills spot where the cooking happens right at the front, on an open flame. You can feel the heat if youโ€™re sitting closeโ€”something regulars are used to.

We stopped by again recently to see what keeps people coming back. The roti is the star of the show, as expected: crispy on the outside, a little chewy inside, and made fresh right in front of you. There are many ways to enjoy itโ€”plain, with eggs, banana, or even as a French toast-style breakfastโ€”but the best combination is with their beef curry.

The beef curry here has a very distinct flavour. Itโ€™s thick, rich, and quite different from the usual southern-style curries. The meat is tender, and the taste lingers nicely without being too spicy. Itโ€™s the kind of dish that makes you want to come back the next day. Thereโ€™s also chicken, fish, and massaman curry, but the beef version stood out the most.

Prices are very reasonable, starting from just 20 baht for plain roti, and going up depending on the combinations. Drinks include Thai milk tea, lemon tea, coffee, and even goatโ€™s milk for something different.
