A souvenir shop in Phuket Old Town
Little Elephant Ceramic Art is on Yaowarat Road in Phuket Old Town, and from the outside, you could easily walk past it. The shopfront is modest, with small windows packed tight with items, and it does not give much away. Step inside, though, and you realise just how large it is. The shop extends deep behind the facade, with well-organised displays that make it easy to browse through hundreds of handicrafts and souvenirs.

The range covers most of what travellers look for: hand-painted ceramics, wooden elephants, traditional Thai dance masks, silk bags, fabrics, accessories, and plenty of smaller items that fit easily into a suitcase. The standout pieces are the Benjarong porcelain. Benjarong, meaning “five colours” in Sanskrit, is a traditional Thai ceramic art that dates back to the Ayutthaya period. Each piece is hand-painted with intricate patterns using mineral-based paints and finished with gold detailing. Originally made exclusively for the Thai royal court, Benjarong is now widely available but still considered one of the most distinctive Thai handicrafts you can bring home.

Beyond the ceramics, the shop carries a good selection of Peranakan-inspired items that reflect Phuket Town’s Sino-Portuguese heritage. This fits naturally with the neighbourhood. Yaowarat Road sits in the heart of the old town’s heritage district, surrounded by restored shophouses, street art and small cafes. The shop is also a short walk from the popular Sunday Walking Street Market on Thalang Road, so you can combine both in a single afternoon.
