Best Surf Schools in Phuket 🏄

Best surf schools and board rentals in Phuket

Here is a list of surf schools in Phuket. We’ve seen surfboard rentals priced from about 150 to 300 baht an hour around the island, while surfing lessons start at about 1,000 baht per person for a group lesson. Private lessons are also available. Ask the surf shop about board delivery if you’re hoping to surf at a different beach.

Talay Surf

Surf Talay Phuket

Talay Surf has been running lessons on Bang Tao Beach for over 12 years. They do surfing and stand-up paddleboarding, plus rentals if you already know what you’re doing. The school sits at the Lazy Coconut end of the beach, which is a good spot for beginners because the waves are manageable. They also run SUP tours when the sea is calm. If you’re staying elsewhere on the island, ask about board delivery. The instructors are used to working with first-timers, so don’t worry if you’ve never touched a board before.

Bangtao Surf School

Another Bang Tao option, this one run by local instructors. They focus on beginners and families, so it’s a good choice if you’re bringing kids. Group lessons and private sessions are both available. The surfing season runs May to November when the waves pick up. During the dry season, December to April, they switch to SUP tours instead, covering paddling, snorkelling, and sunset trips. They can put together multiday packages with accommodation if you want to make a proper trip of it. Board rental is available if you have experience and just need equipment.

SSS Phuket Dive & Surf Centre

SSS operates out of Kata Beach. Surfing lessons run from April to December, and they switch to paddleboarding from October to May when the water calms down. The staff speak a mix of languages, English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Chinese, and Thai, which helps if your English isn’t strong. They can deliver boards to other beaches like Nai Harn if you’d rather surf somewhere else. Some boards come with GoPro mounts if you want footage. It’s part of a larger dive and water sports centre, so the equipment is properly maintained.

Phuket Surf

Phuket Surf is based in Kata and offers both surfing and SUP. Surfing is best from April to November when the swells come in. SUP works better from November to May when things flatten out. They do group and private lessons, and the instructors can adjust to different skill levels. I’d recommend them for beginners who want somewhere close to Kata’s hotels and restaurants. They rent equipment too if you just need a board for the day. Ask them about conditions before you book; they’ll tell you honestly if it’s worth going out.

Saltwater Dreaming

Saltwater Dreaming claims to be Phuket’s original surf shop, opened back in 2000. They’re on Bang Tao Beach and run ISA-certified lessons for beginners and intermediates. The beginner stuff covers the basics: reading waves, popping up, and staying safe. If you’re past that, they work on turning and duck dives. SUP tours run when the surf is flat, usually in the dry season. They post daily surf reports, which are helpful for planning. It’s a smaller operation with a friendly feel, good if you prefer something less commercial than the bigger schools.

Baan Andaman Sea & Surf School

This one operates from the north end of Patong Beach, which has gentler waves for learning. Lessons run May to November. The instructors are ISA-certified, and they keep groups small. You just need swimwear and a towel, they provide everything else. Beyond regular lessons, they run day trips to other breaks around Phuket if you want variety. They also organise multiday surf trips to Khao Lak and further afield, including Java for more serious waves. Board rental and SUP are available too.
