Small temple with a golden chedi in the Old City
Wat Phan On is one of the smaller temples along Rachadamnoen Road in Chiang Mai’s Old City, but it stands out thanks to its large golden chedi at the back. Many visitors come across it by chance while walking the Walking Street Market, as it sits just a few steps off the main street. It’s usually peaceful during the day, with a few people quietly exploring or taking a break in the shaded area near the Bodhi tree.
The chedi was built in 2007 and completely covered in gold, giving the small temple a striking appearance from behind. There’s also a traditional Lanna-style viharn at the front, with carved wooden doors and a large Buddha image inside.
Wat Phan On might not be on the usual temple lists, but it’s a nice stop if they’re already exploring the Old City or passing by the Sunday Market. It’s free to enter, and there are several bells visitors can ring around the grounds, which locals believe bring good fortune.
