Isaan Restaurant in Phuket Town
Siang Khaen is a large, no-frills Isaan restaurant on Mae Luan Road in Phuket Town, almost opposite the Mitsubishi showroom. The place looks like a warehouse, with basic tables and bright lighting, but it fills up every evening with locals who come for the food, not the decor. If you want authentic northeastern Thai cooking in Phuket, this is one of the best options.
What to Order

The menu is extensive, covering the full range of Isaan dishes. The standouts are Som Tam (green papaya salad), Laab Het (spicy mushroom salad), Namtok Nua (grilled beef salad), and Pladook Foo (crispy fried catfish served shredded with a green mango salad). The Som Tam here is made to order, so you can ask for your preferred spice level. Grilled meats, sticky rice and spicy soups round out the menu. Almost everything pairs well with a cold beer, which is how most tables here operate.
Good to Know

Isaan food originates from northeastern Thailand and is known for bold, sharp flavours: sour lime, raw chilli, fish sauce and fresh herbs. If you are not used to Thai spice levels, start mild and work your way up. The staff are used to adjusting the heat for visitors. The restaurant is big enough that you rarely have to wait for a table, even on busy evenings. It is a cash-friendly, come-as-you-are kind of place. No reservations needed.
