Blue Harbour Coffee at Tri-Trang Beach

A Steep Climb Down to a Panoramic Cafe

Blue Harbour Coffee is a small but popular cafe built into the steep hillside along Tri Trang Beach, facing Patong Bay. We drove past it twice before noticing the entrance. It’s on the road to Paradise Beach, and the small bar at the top doesn’t give much away, but the view from the top alone is worth stopping for, especially with a coffee or a drink in hand!

Getting Down There

You reach the cafe by walking down a long series of stairs through thick tropical plants and thatched-roof structures. It’s not an option if you have knee problems or mobility issues. The walk back up will remind you of that.

What It’s Like

The terrace at the bottom is narrow but right on the water. You’re close enough to dip your feet in. There’s a small air-conditioned room next to it, but nobody was using it when we visited. Unless it rains, everyone wants to sit outside. The view across to Patong is excellent, especially when cruise ships are anchored in the bay.

The menu is simple Thai food. Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, fried rice, that kind of thing. We had the Tom Yum, which was decent with good-sized prawns, though not a huge portion. Cocktails are around 170 Baht, which is cheap for a waterfront spot. They also do fresh smoothies, beer, homemade ice cream, and Thai toast. The coffee comes from Smallroom Coffee Roasters, a local roaster run by the barista’s brother. It’s proper coffee, not instant.

Can You Stay There?

Blue Harbour also rents a few small “Bird Nest” dorm-style rooms right on the hillside. Don’t expect a hotel. These are basic, but the location is hard to beat if you want to wake up to this view without paying Rosewood prices next door.

The Elephants

Three young elephants regularly come to the water in front of the cafe. A separate operator brings them down for tourists to feed, take photos with, or ride into the sea. This is a controversial practice, and while it seems fun and cute and people love the elephants, we recommend skipping it.
