Songtek Building, Phuket’s first Chinese school, was established in 1911. Initially, Chinese was taught using rote methods, with teachers holding classes in homes or shrines, known as “Sue Sok,” to educate the Hokkien Chinese descendants in Phuket. In 1917, as the number of students grew, Luang Chanathon Nithet donated land on Dibuk Road to build Songtek School. However, during the political turmoil under Field Marshal P. Phibunsongkhram, the school was forced to close in 1941.

The original Songtek Building has since been restored, preserving its architectural integrity, and is currently home to the Thai Hua Club, a spiritual hub for Phuket’s Chinese community. Songtek Building is a beautiful two-story structure featuring stucco designs and Sino-European architecture. Its signature arches above doors and windows are semicircular, making it one of the many charming old buildings on Dibuk Road in Phuket Old Town.

I arrived in Phuket in 1994 and have never left. After travelling through 40+ countries and working with Club Med and Expedia, where I created the Hotels.com Go Guides international travel guide with my team, I launched Phuket 101 in 2011 to share what I've explored, discovered and learned. Everything here comes from personal experience, with my own photography and videos from across Thailand.View Author posts
