Khaotha Cafe Phuket

A Beautiful Coffee Shop Near the Old Bus Stop

Khaotha Cafe is one of those places thatโ€™s easy to miss but worth finding. Itโ€™s on Ranong Road, just next toย Ranong Main Market (the central market) in Phuket Town โ€” not far from where the old blue songtaew buses line up to take you to the beaches. Most people rush to Thalang Road with its colourful buildings and cafรฉs, but this side of town still feels proper local.

People often stop here before catching the bus. The vibe is relaxed, and the staff are always smiling. The coffeeโ€™s good, and the place is full of random stuff โ€” old film cameras, toys, shelves of bowls and sauces, even a collection of landline phones. Thereโ€™s a red altar glowing in one corner and a big wall of gold Thai lettering that spells out words like โ€œCOOLโ€ and โ€œESPRESโ€. Itโ€™s kind of a mess, but a good one. You wonโ€™t be bored while waiting for your drink.

The name โ€œKhaothaโ€ means something like โ€œmakes senseโ€ in Thai, and it sort of does. Itโ€™s not fancy, but everything works. Youโ€™ve got wooden benches, long shared tables, fans blowing in every direction, and music playing softly in the background.

The coffee menu is simple but includes a guide to help you figure out what kind of roast suits you best:

  • Dark roast: strong, smoky, nutty โ€” less acidic and good if you want a bold cup.
  • Medium roast: a bit sweeter, with more balance.
  • Light roast: more complex and fruity, sometimes a bit floral โ€” they say it keeps the natural flavour of the beans better.

They use beans from up north, grown without chemicals in the forest area around Pai. Itโ€™s not a hipster brew bar, but you can tell they care about what they serve. Your drink usually comes with a little side of tea, which is a nice touch.

If youโ€™ve got time to kill before hopping on a bus, or you just want to sit somewhere that feels different from the Instagram-ready spots, Khaotha is a good one. Itโ€™s the kind of cafe that grows on you. Doesnโ€™t shout for attention, but youโ€™ll probably remember it more than the places that do.
